Do other parents' LOs wake up most nights?

Just needing to hear your experiences as really don't believe it's "normal" to wake most nights.

My DD is nearly 14 months old and I think it's fair to say that it's rare for her to "go through the night". And by "go through the night" I mean sleeping without waking from when she goes to bed (7pm) to when she wakes (around 7am).

Every single night we have no idea what sort of evening or night we're gonna have. Take tonight, my DH is in there now (8pm) trying to settle her. She fell asleep ok at bedtime but woke about 20 mins ago. Something is clearly keeping her from sleeping but who knows what?!? We've given her Calpol so hoping that'll help settle her.

Most nights she wakes up once, twice, 4, 5 times. As I say, we never know what we're gonna get with her.

Is this anyone else's "norm"?

Mine didn't sleep through till he was over 2. And only with regularity since he was 3. It's normal for some of them! But soul destroying, you have my sympathy.

DD is nearly 14 months and has only slept through the night 3 times. Last night she was awake from 10 til midnight then up again at 4. All my NCT friend's babies have been sleeping though since around 4m (bar illnesses/teething etc) so I can't help thinking I'm doing something wrong somehow.

Dcs aged 4 and 6 wake up once or twice a night at least a couple of times a week, sorry! And the 11mo, let's not even go there...

Neither 2yo DS not 4yo DD have ever slept through (i.e. bedtime to morning), the best either of them have done is 6 hours after a midnight/1am waking.

Dd is almost 3 and never stayed a whole night in her own bed. You are not alone :o

My 2.8 yr old wakes a few times a week still, for wees, nightmares, if he gets disturbed by my younger child. It's very tiring!

My dd is almost 22 months and has done the odd 6pm-8am, it was becoming more frequent from about 18 months then she had a chest infection so we put her back on formula because she wasn't eating and it's got her back into the middle of the night bottle routine again.

Although she has always woken we have never had trouble re-settling her, usually it's to pop her dummy back in if it's fallen out of the cot or to do her a bottle which we leave her with so are only up 5 minutes maximum.

I don't know many adults who would do a whole night without waking though, I'm usually up 2-3x a night for a drink/wee and am assuming that once dd is potty trained and in a proper bed she will be up and back to bed without us noticing.

DD is 19mo and has slept through maybe 12-15 times? First time was not until 15m I don't think.

It is worse if she is overtired or has messed around so much at bedtime she's got all wound up. Also disaster can strike if the day has been all wrong and she confuses bedtime with a nap!

Nursery, being properly physically tired and eating well during the day all help.

My dd is 2.5 and never slept through the night, waking once or twice for 'mummy milk'

My ds (now 3.5) slept through 7-7 from about 4 months, but when I say that, he used to wake at 9pm on the dot every night. Sometimes he'd wake at other times too. We'd generally ignore him & let him settle himself unless his noises went on a bit & he obviously needed help to settle. We figured out if we rushed in there it prolonged hips wakefulness. I think it's only the equivalent of me waking at 3am to go to the loo & get a drink.

Same here at 17m. However there are signs of improvement just these last couple of weeks. They'll all get there eventually but it is truly shit.

17mo and 2.10yo. Every few weeks one of them (dd1 normally) wakes up, sometimes a couple of nights in a row, then they get back to sleeping. 17mo has hardly ever woken up since she started sleeping through at 8 or 9mo

It's completely normal for babies and children to wake during the night, in fact it's normal for adults too. Adults wake multiple times per night, we just don't notice it happening because we very quickly self settle back to sleep, babies and children don't have the ability to self settle like adults do. It's shit, but they get there eventually and one day won't need you to settle back to sleep.
