Should I wake toddler up from nap?

I've never woken my DS (16 months) up from a nap, so I'm wondering whether its a good idea?

DS wakes up around 8-9am, has a nap around 2pm for around 2-3 hours and then understandably doesn't want to go to bed till 10-11pm.

Is it ok if I wake him up after an hour or hour half into his nap? How long are they supposed to sleep at this age?

Will he nap earlier in the day?

We never let my son sleep past 3, otherwise we have issues getting him to sleep at night. He sleeps 1-3, then is in bed again 7-7. He dropped his morning nap at 13 months-ish, and we've had this routine ever since. Waking him up is fine.

Yes, nap earlier in the day would definitely work better than waking him. If my DS is anything to go by it only makes for a grumpy toddler and nobody wants that!

I think I would. Maybe start cutting it down to 2 hours, then 90 mins? They definitely need a nap at that age, but trying to get the bulk of the sleep into the night time is better. He's having 13 hours sleep which is great, but it'd probably be better for everyone (you too, if you want some evening back!) to get 11-12 hours at night and 1-2 hours during the day.

Mine's 18 months and sleeping about the same amount as yours - a solid ten hours overnight and two or three hours in the day. It's the timings that differ though - mine's in bed at 7, asleep by 8, wakes up just after 6, naptime starts around 11 in the morning. Your 8 or 9am starts sound lovely, but you may have to sacrifice them if you want your evenings back. I'd go for waking him up earlier in the morning and having the nap earlier to match. He likes to be awake six hours between nap and bedtime? Aim for going down for a nap by noon. And good luck!

I agree with stormy, it does sound lovely that your dc will sleep in till 9am but I would go for waking them up in the morning, letting them nap for as long as they need in the day and then hopefully bed time will naturally be earlier
Ds gets up between 6.30 and 7 Shock but has to be when dh and I are in work, he is in bed by 7.30 and sleeps for about 1.5-3hrs during the day (a little less at nursery Hmm) he has had the same routine for a long time

Hope you get sorted
