Feeling numb....

DSS (8) has today been diagnosed with ADHD - did not see that coming what happens now ?

This happened to us with DS2 about four or five years ago.

We eventually made the decision to try medication. It wasn't something we did lightly. After trying three or four different formulations, we happened across one that suited him.

Now that he has a treatment that works for him, things have got much better for him over the last couple of years. He is able to cope better at school, he has made some friends, taken up some hobbies.

Very occasionally he forgets to take his medication in the morning. When this happens, the results are not happy, and this reminds us why he is still taking it.

Have you been given a follow-up appointment? I know it's a big adjustment when your child gets a diagnosis like this, but he is still the same DS you know and love, it's just that now he can hopefully get some help/support with his difficulties.

Yes, my husband was handed a leaflet and made another appointment . I just know how to start to process this as our if the three parties involved us , dss mum and the school only his mum thought there was something . He's find at school and acts brilliantly with us - we are so confused ! Cab I diagnoses really be made based on 3 appts one hour of obs at school and one hour of chat with him? I could see that if he was right off the scale and it was obvious but myself my husband and school are all stumped!

I think the difficulties have to be present in at least two settings, e.g. at school and at his mum's house. Perhaps there's more going on at school than his dad has been told? If he copes well when he's with you then that's good, surely?

I thought it can be made worse by food, is he having something there he is not elsewhere?

I work in dentistry so I'm very strict on sweets and sugary drinks like he will hardly ever get them so possibly ? We have been to numerous meeting at school about this topic and got all doctors record etc and it's been documented as no problems ? Absolutely so confused - yes u happy about the fact we don't see it but worried if he's put on medication then he won't be the same wee boy :-(
