Its a 6-9 month check here and I had becky's last week.

The HV weighed her, measured her length and asked me about feeding and whats she can and cant do development wise.

She was pulled from her hands to a sitting position to check neck lag, and the HV lay her on her tummy to check the creases in her bum and legs (which I need to go to docs for today because Becky's dont line up the way they should)

Common questions i think are : do they pass a toy from one hand to another, are they using a pincer grip, are they using 2 sylabble (sp?) sounds like da-da ba-ba etc, are they sitting, rolling etc.

HTH

I'm beginnig to worry that my HV team are not very good at all. We had all the questions and were given a bookstart pack - that was it, all over in 5 minutes flat. I do take DS to the clinic to be weighed every 3 weeks so I suppose the HV remembered doing this the week previously but nobody has offered to measure him since he was about a week old. He was measured at about 3 months but only because I asked specifically in order to buy a Christening outfit. None of these other developmental checks at any of the home visits. Should I be concerned?

Kipper, neither of my DSs has ever been measured, not at birth or any of their checks. DS2 is two now and I'm not sure if his height will be done at his two year check - it'll be the first time I've ever known what he measures from head to toe!

They weighed and measured, asked about feeding and sleeping, observed babbling and interaction, asked about sitting, crawling, pulling up etc, gave toys to pick up looking for pincer grasp and other manipulation stuff. They still did a distraction hearing test when mine were small, but I don't think they do that any more. Checked for undescended testicles (I've got boys!) and for hip dysplasia.

Even more worried now Singersgirl - the HV did not touch DS at all. :(

I did not bother with the 8 month health check. Is this awful? I think if you thought something was wrong it would be very obvious. A good book to check against is "What to expect, the first year". Even then it contradicted itself in each month.

To be honest it's not even with a doctor and I'm sorry to say it but really are health visitors any good anyway? I think the important check is the one with the Dr when they are very little.

Kipper, thats exactly the same with my check. It was a nursery nurse who did ds' not even a hv. They asked about stairgates, cupboard door locks etc, asked (but didn't actually want to see) if ds coud sit, crawl etc, asked about feeding etc.

He wasn't weighed or measured in any way. :o

Infants at surgeries in areas not considered 'deprived' in Edinburgh no longer get an 8 month check.
