early waking in his new bedroom

Ds1 has been in his big bed for 3 months but has just moved into his new room. For the past week he has been waking between 4 and 5 in the morning . He doesn't cry just opens his door and turns his light on. He then just potters around in his room, lies on his bed chilling. He has no toys in there just a few board books. He has a gate on the door and all the sockets are safe so there is no danger. He doesnt cry til nearly 7 if at all. My question is should I be going down resettling him, turn off light etc, which he thinks is a game, or as he is happy amusing himself shall I let him just potter. I imagine he may always have woken up but I never knew. He is starting to take longer to settle for naps and isn't too bad if he has no naps at all., but when he does have one It's nearly 3 hours. He is always in bed by 7. I have always been a believer in sleep breeding sleep but is he past that now. He is crying at silly things that previously I don't think he would have so my thought is he needs more sleep. He is 2yr 3 months.

In summary - should a resettle him in the early morning, should I drop his naps or limit them to just an hour, or any other ideas?

I wouldn't limit naps, and if he's quite happy pottering in the morning I'd leave him to it! I wish my DS (21m) who also wakes up between 4 and 5 was happy to potter until 7. This morning's wakeup for the day was close to 3.30.

I've tried everything I can think of. The best I can say is that SOMETIMES he will go back to sleep after a 4am wakeup, but other times he's convinced that that's when the day starts.

I would defo leave him to potter. If he's happy and able to amuse himself for an hour or two, then this is a GREAT skill for him to have! (and for you!) And if he was ever distressed for whatever reason then he would presumably cry or call out for you.

As for naps, if he naps and still goes to bed at 7 then I would leave him to nap if he wants. My dd1 would only nap for 1/2 hour but when she was about the same age as your DS, we found that her napping was pushing bedtime back. So we worked on dropping the nap which was hard (esp if in the car and impossible to wake her) but we're there now (she's 3 at the end if this mth). If she has a nap now, bedtime can be a problem, so we try to neutralise it by going swimming or out for a play if possible.

Dd is the same age although she's not in a big bed yet. Dd has always been a bad sleeper at night - however recently I've woken her after an hour nap in the afternoon and her sleep has dramatically Im

Dramatically improved :) perhaps it is worth a shot for your ds to help the early waking?
