What toys for a 4 month old?

Hi

I would be grateful for suggestions on useful toys for a 4 month old. He can grab his mobile and rattle and likes touching different fabrics from his teddy bears but he gets bored easily.

I think they do get bored easily at that age. DS liked anything with a label, or different feeling fabrics, and also his gym, and being bounced and sung, looking in mirrors, that kind of thing.

Thanks cosmo. How long are baby gyms useful for? I didn't buy one - is it worth it?

we have the wooden ikea one and he still played with it a bit at around 7m and now he's starting to stand he can use it to stand up & lean on. I'd have a look on ebay and see if you can get one 2nd hand, I would buy one again.

Household items that you don't mind getting licked/gummed can be fine too - a wooden spoon, plastic spatula, pastry brush (I had a silicone one), scourer, old remote control - they're cheap, easy to replace and all have a different feel.

My 4 month old loves her baby gym. We got a Tiny Love one and she spends a lot of time pulling on the toys and staring in the mirror. She also loves the LaMaze toys she has. This one: activity knot and this one Captain Calamari.

baby gym was a winner for us. know they're pricey but a jumperoo also went down a treat. she loved going for outings and walks too. it was also around this time that she began to sit in her bumbo which she absolutely adored - i would take her around the house with me and she'd watch me to bits and bobs :) HTH!

DS is 4.5 months and also loves his baby gym. The noises it makes freak him out though, so he just plays with the mirror etc.

Like Muser, Lamaze toys also go down very well; we have the ones that hang from the buggy, and they are worth at least 20 minutes of entertainment.

Also, recently bought a batch ELC toys from a charity shop (normally hate the place). Plastic, brightly coloured, and in lots of weird and wonderful shapes. They make noises and rattle about, and many of them have teething bits. Teething bits are a godsend.

Sophie Giraffe! Loud and chewy and smelly - what's not to like?

My 4 month old loves her Sophie!

Also I've got a few fabric books that she loves to gum! Can recommend Where's My Caterpillar as this is a particular fave.

We've also just bought the jumperoo. Now that she can sit up straight she loves bouncing in it. A lot!

Can't beat Sophie though in this house.

When mine was 4 months old the only toy he liked was his jumperoo! it was very expensive but the only toy i can honestly say was worth the money as he's really used it. At 14months he's still loving it, though now he is also able to walk round it, use the sides of it to pull up.

DD loved her baby gym. This is a great toy from sitting onwards as the front comes off and has a lot to do on it. DD also loved her whoozit.

Definitely seconding Sophie the Giraffe, Lamaze toys (we have Emily), and the Jumperoo. They are seriously great, and I know the Jumperoo is pricey but we just had so much use out of it with two children. We had to put a pizza box under DD1's feet for the first couple of weeks, as she's only on the 25th centile and shorty like her mum!!!!! Also the Manhattan Toys Squish (or Skwish? can't remember how they spell it) is fun.
