What age is suitable for a scooter?

My DD is 22 months and has mentioned several times that she wants a scooter, and gets very excited when she sees other children on them. She isn't the tallest (about 82cm) and I think she is probably too young to be able to safely use one, but I'm not sure if I am being too cautious. Any thoughts?

I got one for my DD's 2nd birthday. She's 84 cm. It was also in response to demands for scooters and attempts to 'borrow' other childrens' scooters at the park.

Two weeks in, she's still getting to grips with it. We're mostly pushing her while she uses her leg to push along. Or she walks around with it. So not quite ready, which has a lot of advantages since they can go so damn fast on them. She's quite a cautious child so it will probably take a bit longer till she's scooting properly.

I got a mini micro which everyone seems to recommend as the safest one. Also got the Julia Donaldson book called Pip and Posy which is about a tussle over a scooter. Quite good for telling a simple lesson about being careful on the scooter and the pictures in it are great.

Dd2 and ds both had them when they were 2yo. It was a bit of a struggle with dd2 as she's missing her hand and the foot she wanted to scoot with was not really compatable with holding on that side. They both had a holiday where they were scooting everywhere and then were fairly good at it. It did take some practice though.

Thanks for the responses - very helpful and love the book idea.

We got those mini micro ones for both DDs who were 26 months and 2.5yrs. They're really great scooters and they've been fine on them, they do fall off a bit but not too much and it's amazing how quick the whizz around - makes the preschool run way easier too...

My dgs learned to use his brother's mini micro scooter at about 22 months-he is now 2.4 and scoots very efficiently-I'd go for it if I were you.
