We're there with our boys name, Toby, but can't decide on girls. The shortlist is as follows:

Kitty Emilia
Sylvie Emilia
Ellie Martha

On another thread I've seen that Kitty and Sylvie are touted as the next big thing, and getting more common now and we know that Ellie has probably peaked in popularity but these are names I've loved since a child so are not put off.

Sylvie is my favourite from your list. the world is full of baby Ellies, and Kitty is a stripper's name.

LOVE Toby - gorgeous name.

Sylvie or Kitty, they're gorgeous. Hardly a day goes by without me encountering an Ellie, and Martha is a bit meh.

Another fan of Toby here

I too LOVE Sylvie but dh wouldn't budge on it Sylvie all the way for me

Kitty is a lovely name, I also love the name Katherine so would use the full name, if you don't like Katherine, then Kitty is a fine name in it's own right. I prefer Amelia to Emilia.

Sylvie is just gorgeous and is my favourite of your choices.

Ellie, I really don't like. Every Ellie that I've ever known has been, erm ...challenging. It puts me off the name. I do love Ella though.

Good luck

Meant to say that I don't like Martha. I know I'm in a minority there because the world and his dog seems to love Martha, but it's a name that I just don't get.

I think Kitty already is over popular-I would only use it as the short form of something. The same with Ellie-much prefer Eleanor. I don't like Emilia-but Amelia or Emily are lovely.
I don't like Sylvie.
Martha and Toby OK.

I don't know any Kittys. I know of one Katherine who is occasionally shortened to Kitty by her mum, but isn't 'known' as Kitty.

Am im NW England.

Thank you all, it's 5 : 3 to Sylvie at the moment. We both like Amelia too but would give initials SAC which I'm not too keen on.
I think we're both back to Kitty or Sylvie, our parents weren't impressed with either when mentioned sometime back but am sure that will be different if presented with a brand new named grandchild.
I've always been called by a shortened version of my name, although a name in it's own right, and would want to avoid the formal name for 'when done wrong' and shortened name the rest of the time, as is very annoying. A long way of saying we'd christen the baby what it would be called day to day, hormones!

oltob am of the formal on certificates/shortened name for everyday use brigade however thats for my own personal reasons (I grew up hating my name and wanted to give my girls choices) and don't think it matters either way as long as you love it

as for everyone else, just stop discussing names until baby arrives, nobody else's business but they will ALL have an opinion on it

why not keep a few you like until Baby comes and then you have a choice of what suits her/him

good luck either way

How about Elodie?

Report
cthea · 31/07/2009 11:19

Sylvie is gorgeous and you can't really shorten it any further. (We call her Silver or Sylvester to be silly.)

Report
lowrib · 31/07/2009 11:22

I think Elodie Martha has a nicer rhythm than Ellie Martha, and Elodie is a very pretty name.

Kitty Emilia and Sylvie Emilia are both lovely.

lowrib, I agree Elodie is lovely and have already tried to convince other half of it but to no avail.

dizzydixies, possibly it was my rather opinionated Mother, but I'm named Beth after little women and although I was given the option to call myself other diminutives from Elizabeth which is my formal name, and I seem to remember going through a stage of wanting to be called Eliza, it never caught on. When I got married the priest even asked me if I wanted to change my name and offered Isabella instead. Nick names / formal names are fine but it's much easier when they're the same initial as it avoids the confusion on paperwork. I'm still hoping they won't call me Elizabeth in the delivery room as will not be conducive to relaxation.

Surely Kit-off is a stripper's name!

My favourite is Sylvie - very classy.

Good luck.

Ellie should be short for something I always thought? Wouldn't have occured to me to just use it as it is.

Xavielli · 01/08/2009 15:50

Sorry! Hadn't seen your post where you said you didn't want a naughtiness name!

Report

Sylvie is beautiful. Kitty is too like a pet's name. I know it gets a lot of love on this board though, but I think it's just not suitable for a child. Katherine is ok but dull. Can't fault Sylvie.
