Hermione - we like the grandeur but not the association - alternatives?

My partner and i think Hermione is a gorgeous name. Unfortunately neither of us likes Harry Potter! Can you suggest any other names that have that classical feeling? I think Hermione sounds quite grand, unusual, and sophisticated. I can't think of any alternatives.

I love Hermione
At least after Harry Potter people will be able to say it, my friend used to get a lot of Her - me - own.

What about
Octavia
Clara (I have one of those!)
Helena
Penelope

I think Hermione is a gorgeous name too - I would definitely still go for it - like humph says, at least they other kids'll be able to say it and spell it!

I feel the same about Hermione, nice name but HP drives me mad, so could never use it. How about;

Aurelia
Berenice
Cassandra
Evangeline
Georgiana (pronounced George-Jayna like the Duchess of Devonshire).
Ianthe
Juno
Lavinia
Pandora
Persephone

Just go for Hermione. HP won't be popular forever and even if it does have some associations for some people, at least she's a very positive role model for girls (clever, sassy, talented, etc.). You can always abbreviate it to Mya (or she can when she's older).

But I know what you mean - I have always loved the name Juno, but the association with the film puts me off slightly now.

Hermia in a midsummmer nights dream is a variation of Hermionie (but saying that it does sound it Hernia!)
I think the following all sound quite grand but without the HP association hope it helps:

Penelope
Cordelia
Ophelia
Carlotta
Artemis
Rosamund
Elspeth

I would stick with Hermione, but the time your daughter is at school the films will all be well gone and by the time she is a grown up no one will be able t remember it, they will just think it is a pretty name.

We had a very dignified, quiet, educated French teacher once whose name was Hermance.

I was a little bit scared of her

Viviana
Persephone

I love Rosamund and Artemis, although would never be able to use the latter as with my surname it would sound too poncey for words

My dad was going to call me HeRione which is apparently some sort of greek plant :/

Sadly, it looks like Heroin a little too much.

Oh goodness, you have reminded me...we know a family with a Bathsheba and an Octavia. I think it's impressive and also quite that they were brave enough.
