doh! Hadn't really thought of Gus as being short for Magnus. I know 2 of those, aged 3 and 5.

Several. but half my family is from Norway. Personally i love the name. Had never heard it before my cousin called his son it.

I usually think of Gus as short for Angus of which I know quite a few but Magnus I know none personally. Like it though

yes, I would have thought angus = gus more than Magnus. I reckon Magnus would get abbreviated to Mags, if anything?

If you're concerned about popularity, have you been to the Bounty site? I would never pick a child's name without checking there first.

It will tell you where it comes on the list of children's names for the previous year and whether it is rising or falling in popularity.
