Am currently pregnant with first dc, (due beg. Jan). Don't know what we're having, but have already settled on girls name we both love, (Holly). Cannot, however, pick a boys name. Current thinking goes as follows:

Byron (my choice)
Dexter (DH's choice)
Nate
Luca
Marcus (DH hates this one, and has already vetoed it sadly)
Freddie (we both like this one, but our surname also starts with FRE- so would sound a bit odd)

DH thinks Byron is 'too poncey', and will be misheard/mis-spelt as Bryan.

I think Dexter will just lead people to think of psychopathic serial killers.

All views welcome, (even negative)
Cheers

Love luca

Byron - a lot to live up to

Marcus - nice (what about Mark or Michael)

Freddie (if shortened from Frederick) is a lovely name but I quite agree that it doesn't sound good with a surname beginning with Fre-.

Luca is too Italian. Lucas is better.

Luca, and Marcus are the only ones of those that I like, if we had a ds hewould have been lucas.

Byron - don't care for last names as first names
Dexter - serial killer
Nate - short for Nathan. Really good.
Marcus - OK - a bit "nothing-y"
Freddie - OK so long as it's a short for Frederick.

I love Nathan shortened to Nate. Not massively keen on any of the others. But what do I know?!

Oh sorry - Luca. I'm not sure about using boy's names ending in -a in Britain. I think they sound like girl's names.

Love Freddie but I am biased. But with a surname starting FRE it might sound strange really.

Like Nate and Marcus.

Dexter again makes me think of serial killer, which is a shame as its a nice name.

Luca. Agree on your DH's thoughts re Byron (wasn't he nuts and quite unpleasant, anyway?), and yours re Dexter. I do like Marcus. And Nate doesn't sound like a proper name.

Wow! Thanks for all your fast responses! Looks like neither of our faves is too popular then!!! RubySlipper- thanks for your suggestions; DH is actually Michael & doesn't want to name baby after himself, so that one's out. I like Mark, but is my BF's hubby and think she might find it weird!! Seeker- good point about Luca, it does sound a bit feminine now you mention it. Glad you like Nate, (I used to be a huge fan of Six Feet Under, which is where I got that one from).

Cross-posted Kayz and Hassled, thanks for your views. I didn't know that about Byron I must admit (ignoramus)!! Glad you agree with me about Dexter!!

I love Marcus and my DH had vetoed it too. Alas, we had girls anyway.

i like Dexter and Freddie. I love alliteration so Freddie Frexxx sounds really fab to me.

re: dexter - who cares about some stupid tv programme that no one will remember in a few years.

agree with your dh that Byron will be misheard.

ByTheSea - Marcus seems a bit unpopular with chaps doesn't it? Most of my female friends like it, but not the guys. One even screwed up his face and muttered something about "public schoolboy name, yuk"!!

Marcus is my favourite. I like Luca (is incredibly popular here in Germany just now) and think I like Byron. Freddie is quite nice but would not be my choice and definitely not good with a 'Fre-' surname. Nate as an abbreviation is nice but not as a stand-alone name. Dexter - resounding no from me, I'm afraid.

I think Dexter is fine. We all may think ;serial killer', but your DS's generation won't.

I agree with seeker RE Luca, although it is a lovely name.

If you like Marcus, how about Marco?

Freddie's nice, although Freddie and Frederick are two a penny arond here, that doesn't necessarily matter but might be something to consider.

Chandellina- that's just what my DH said about Dexter! He also pointed out that even if it were still on, it's unlikely to be popular viewing with primary school kids. I like alliteration in names too, I probably just worry too much about teasing, (I have an unusual name, and spent years being teased/having to spell it/tell people how to pronounce it etc). Thanks for your views!

Berolina and Overmydeadbody- thank you. You're right about Freddie, very common around here too! Am going to tell DH how popular Marcus is and try to win him round! Failing that, am pleased that Nate/Nathan popular as was my (very close) second choice. Cheers everyone. x

Not keen on any. I like Mark.

I like Nate as short for Nathaniel, as Nathan is a bit "plain" for me). Byron is fantastically poncy I actually quite like it. Dexter makes me think of Dexter's Laboratory (we also have a server called Dexter), so no particular negatives for me. Luca is a little bit effeminate. Freddie is fine as a shortening (Alfred/Frederick), but I don't like diminutives as given names, and the alliteration might be a bit twee. Not much point in commenting on Marcus

BabyBaby123 · 10/10/2008 20:53

not overly keen on any of them sorry - I also like Nathaniel though, which you could shorten to Nate

Definitly Byron or Luca. Prefer Luca, I think it's a fab name. I actually think it's a very cool, masculine sounding name.
Dexter - I do think of a sociopath lol.
Marcus - awful imo!
Nate is a bit American sounding but ok.
Freddie is cute but too popular and probably not with an F surname.

Report
marmaspook · 10/10/2008 22:34

Luca is really nice.

Dexter makes me think of Dex Dexter from Dynasty

Report
surprise · 11/10/2008 00:08

Byron - a bit poncey
Dexter - very American, not nice
Nate - WTF?
Luca - my fave of the bunch
Marcus - OK
Freddie - a bit ordinary

Dexter- no sounds like a surname.
Nate- love Nate/Nathan wanted for mine but no-wayed by dh boo!
Luca- no poncey prefer Luke.
Marcus-no poncey.
Freddie- love but not with F surname.

Byron NO
Dexter NO
Nate NO
Luca NO
Marcus Okay but a bit patrician
Freddie NO

Byron - I don't usually care for last names as first names, but in this case I feel duty-bound to make an exception!
Dexter - think the serial killer association will be short-lived, but it still fails my surname as first name test
Nate - prefer Nathaniel, which was the name of the character in Six Feet Under
Marcus - no strong view
Freddie - Ok as an abbreviation but think the full name should be used, so that he can make his own choice when he's older

Nathaniel and Frederick would be my first choices, but who cares what a mad old biddy on the internet thinks?
