Both nice names, some people will think the name 'Madeleine' or 'Maddie' is too much associated with the McCanns, but I think it's a lovely name and for me this wouldn't be an issue- any more than Holly and Jessica (my child's best friends' names) is an issue.

I couldn't think how Penelope was said as a child, I knew the name from a book and though it was said Pen-elowp. Only found out as an adult. But not everyone is as dozy as me!

I absolutely agree with that.

Why is Madeleine McCann an issue? Lots of children have the same names as child victims.

Yes they do but for some reason I just feel that I would not want to give my DD the same name as Madeleine McCann.

I am not sure why I feel like that but I do.

Both on my list! Due Saturday. I'm going for Madeline but choosing the English spelling over the French (as in Keats and Tennyson) I think...

Since choosing the name though I've noticed the name Madeleine/Maddie/Madeline pop up LOADS in the baby names board, is it about to skyrocket in terms of popularity? As its way down (where I like it!) at the moment.

A few people from the older generation have mentioned the McCann link to me, which is partially why I'm going for the English spelling too. But you're totally right OP, there are plenty of Hollys, Jessicas, Sarahs, Millies etc (the list is too horribly long...)

Penelope is gorgeous, I would have liked that, but two sons and a comedy surname made it impossible...

Madeleine is a gorgeous name, not so keen on Penelope if I am honest, Matilda is lovely too in my opinion.

Both good names but think I prefer Madeleine because Penny is a bit plain without being classic.

Madeleine is lovely. Never been that keen on Penelope really, although it's obviously classic, just don't like the sound.

Depends if you prefer Maddy or Penny because they are the default shortening.

I love Madeleine but don't like Maddy.
I like Penelope but don't like Penny.
That's the reason I didn't use either name myself

Both Madeleine and Penelope were on my girls list, with Madeleine being right at the top.

I love the shortening Penny, but I'm not keen on Maddy which might have ultimately put me off Madeleine (if I was having a girl)

Both are great. I think Penelope is used less which might be nice.

Madeleine. Beautiful.

I've never liked Penelope. Too many p sounds, and Penny is frumpy.

Madeleine is lovely. I wouldn't think of the McCanns.
