Which boys name?

What do you like best? We have issues with every one of these and we can't really decide...please help!

Max (DH doesn't like the long versions so just Max which feels a bit incomplete to me)
Sebastian (we both hate all of the short names for this one and would have liked the name to have a shorter version)
Noah
Martin
Philip

Out first son's name is Theodore (we call him Theo).

Thanks!!

Max or Noah since Philip and Martin a bit dated for me.
I love Sebastian but I think you'd have to be happy with Seb too.

Theo with Sebastian or Maximus
Noah is nice.
Def not Philip or Martin!!

Philip is a great name. It doesn't go with out surname otherwise I'd have used it.

Max or Noah would be my next picks.

I have a Max (Maximilian) and Sebbie (Sebastian). So I'm biased but love these.

Max(imus) or Seb(astian) are nice.

Not wild about the other names. Phillip and Martin are very old sounding, and Noah is popular and too biblical, which I'm personally not keen on.

Prefer Max, infact really like Max. Sebastian is ok but a bit flowery. The others are a little dated

Sebastien or Philip.

Theo and Pip go nicely together too.

Personally I don't find Philip as dated as Martin - actually really like it and love Pip as a nn.

Philip or Martin! More unusual nowadays than the others.

I can't stand Noah, it sounds like a fart in a drainpipe.
I share your feelings about Sebastian, nice name but the shortenings are not.
I agree Max is a little insubstantial. Have you thought of Maxwell? Not as cumbersome as other versions. Maxence is nice too, but probably too French.
Martin is OK, but I can think of many names I prefer.
Same goes for Philip.

What about Marcus?

Call him Sebastian and people will shorten it.

I want to say Noah or Max as Philip and Martin are dated, but actually either of he latter would at least be more original and after a while others stop noticing.

I like Phillip to goes well with Theo and there's not going to be twenty other Phillips in his class at school. There's so many boys called Max, Noah and Seb at the moment. I also know lots of dogs called Max but I don't dislike it.

Sebastian is lovely and you know you can always call him his full name. But if you are bothered about what other people call him, then yeah it's pretty much a no-go.

As has been said - Philip and Martin are both dated and by far the worst of your options.

Noah is too popular.

Theo and Max go really well together! And if you called him Maximilian (for example) he'd always be Max anyway. So while I agree that using a shortening as his birth certificate name is not ideal, I would still compromise with DH as it is the best option you have. I think I'd get over it eventually anyway.

Theo and Max sounds good Smile

Can I suggest Michael or Jonathan (shortened to Nathan)? Traditional and timeless imo.

Theo and Max, perfect !😄

Report
Rockaby · 15/05/2017 20:26

Max or Noah go best with Theo I think. I do like the others too though.

Max, Sebastian and Philip and all great.

Noah is soooooo overdone. Please no more Noah's

Martin feels very dated

Report
Mrsknackered · 15/05/2017 23:46

Noah or Max.
Please not Philip or Martin are there any under 40?

AbernathysFringe · 15/05/2017 23:53

Maxim as alternative longer Max?
I love that Philip in the US 'Shameless' is shortened to 'Lip'. Not sure it would be so good with an English accent.
What about Theo and Kristoff/Kris?

Many thanks for all your responses! It looks like Max and Noah are the favourites which is more or less what we were thinking. Max is probably the top choice at the moment

I like the idea of using Maxim as the longer version. One question though - does anyone associate this with the dirty magazine? Will my child be teased at school for using that name?

I associate Maxim with the noun maxim, I don't think of it as a name at all. Maybe that's because I'm a lawyer and encounter the word reasonably often.

Max and Sebastian are the best from your list. I know loads of Sebastian's- Seb's, Sebby, Bastie.

I suggest Nathanial / Nat / Nate as I think if matches Theo

Impatientwino · 17/05/2017 22:18

We have a Sebastian and actually find that people rarely shorten it. I call him Seb sometimes and his grandparents sometimes use Sebbie but he's only 4 - I think when he's old enough he will dictate what version we call him - it's his name after all....

Report
loveisenough · 17/05/2017 22:50

I really like Seb so my top choice would be Sebastian but as you don't like the shortened version I'd go for Noah instead.
