Matching Initials?

TinyClanger27 · 19/03/2017 12:49

Hello, think we've finally got a shortlist for DC2 to accompany our lovely Imogen but there are a couple of 'I' girls names - are matching Initials too twee, or can we get away with it?

Thoughts on the shortlists would be great - middle names are likely to include James/Cecilia.

Boys:
Edward
Fraser
Percy
Rory

Girls:
Felicity
Hermione
Iris
Isabella

Our dd2 will have the same initials, including middle name as it is given to all the girls in our family. To be honest I never gave it a second though about them matching and being twee! We just chose a name because we love it and it's just coincidence it shares the same letter as our dd1. Go with a name you love, don't sweat the small stuff!

And Iris is absolutely beautiful Smile

May be a problem when they're older and receiving mail, especially if it's something confidential.

We ruled out any matching first name initials for reasons of post, school uniform, any clubs they're in together etc.

Love Iris and Imogen.

I hate it when people say 'don't name your kids the same first initial incase they get confusing post'

Really? You're gonna let a possible future letter dictate what you call your baby?
Load of crap.

My daughters have the same initials and it causes no problems whatsoever

I'm sorry you hate it, Ilike (!) but we're all different. I put quite a lot of thought into naming our kids and I definitely ruled out same initials. There's other preferences I'm sure we differ. It's quite reasonable for it to be a preference though even if it's one you dont share.

Surnames as firstnames is something I also wouldn't do, but many do. Hence discussion on mn! Hating other people's preferences seems a bit strong.

My two have the same first initials, not caused any issues (and in fact can be quite useful e.g. with clothes labels "J Surname" covering both!)

Iris is lovely.
Fraser of Rory.

Thanks everyone - I do like the idea of only labelling clothes once! Iris is definitely a frontrunner then...!x

My three dds have matching initials (they do have different middle initials). I didn't even notice until everyone made the assumption that it had been done deliberately. It's convenient in that we can pass Secondary overpriced PE kit which has initials on it. But it is starting to be a problem with post.

FWIW, we have an unusual surname, and so I simply got a load of labels that said Smith Smith Smith*. They do for my son as well (he has a different initial.

*This is obviously not our surname.

I like Edward and Felicity.
I wouldn't have matching initials, personally.

Matching initials wouldn't matter for me unless I was having a gaggle of kids and then felt obliged to carry on with it like the Duggars.

Imogen and Edward
Imogen and Hermione

Both lovely.

I also like that Imogen and Hermione are Shakespearean characters.

Two of mine have names starting with E (Eve and Esther) and it didn't even occur to me until after they were born!

Not caused any problems yet and they're 6 and 10 now.

I like Isabella from the list.

It's likely to either be shortened to Izzy or Bella. If they end up being Immy and Izzy, it'll be too much, but Immy and Bella would be fine.

I like Edward, Fraser and Rory from your boys list. There's a currently active thread about Percy and I'd suggest you check it out because many people (myself included) associate it with slang for penis.

I like all the names on your list with the exception of Percy.

I have no problem with matching initials either.

My brother and I both have the same first initial and I've never given it much thought! Obviously we were Mr/Miss but I don't think it's that big a deal. Plus my mum also labelled all school stuff etc once as we shared some things!

I like Edward, Rory and Fraser from your boys list.

I like Iris and Felicity best from your girls list but all lovely.

You have some lovely names on your list! My favourites are Edward and Rory from the boys list, and Felicity and Iris from your gifs list.

Personally I would avoid matching initials (even though I love the name Iris!) My husband and I have matching initials and it is really annoying! My Mum and her siblings all had the same initials growing up too and she really hated it.

Gosh - lots of replies, thanks everyone! And had no idea about the Percy thing...I thought Percy Pigs would be the worst association!

Think if it's another girl it's definitely between Felicity and Iris. Hmm, maybe I'll use one as another middle name!
