Honest opinions on these shortlisted names

I've name changed for this as I've discussed some of these in 'real life' as part of our final choices.

So would welcome honest opinions on these, please. Pretty much set in our ways as these were on the short list a few years ago and not used. It's a very short shortlist.

Augusta
Thomasina
Guinevere

Percy
Ivan
Joseph

Guinevere and Joseph are really nice. I also quite like Percy.

I don't like Ivan, Augusta or Thomasina.

I only like Joseph. The girls names are way too out there for me. I do know a teen Ivan though.

I love Thomasina.
Like Augusta.
Dislike Guinevere.

Love Joseph.
Ivan is okay.
It's a no, for Percy.

I like Joseph. That's it sorry.

Joseph's ok.
The others are awful imo. But you did ask for an honest opinion Smile

I really don't like any of the girls names. If forced I would go for Thomasina.

I like all the boys names. I really wanted a Percy, but when someone with a Ptolemy said it sounded 'a bit wet and pretentious' it put me right off! Joseph is nice, but a bit 'meh' in comparison to your other choices. I'd go with Ivan.

I only like Joseph and Guinevere.
The others sound to try hard for me.

Liking or not liking names can be very personal, I love both my dd's names but have seen them both on a board discussing names that people don't like!

I've worked in a school so heard a lot of names, I wouldn't bat an eyelid at Ivan or Joseph (although not seen an Ivan at school and Joseph is not really common any more). To me the girls names are a little out there but the only one I would steer clear of is Guineavere as other she'll be spelling it and re-pronouncing it forever (I know, I do not have a common name). Maybe Genevieve??

Not a fan of any 😐 At a push Joseph

Don't apologise. I asked for honest opinions and got them, not about to take it personally. Thanks so far for all contributions

I really wanted a Percy, but when someone with a Ptolemy said it sounded 'a bit wet and pretentious' it put me right off!

Oh no, really Grin

Joseph is a bit the odd name out, I think.

Guinevere - yes, I can see from this thread people might struggle with spelling and that has surprised me

Not my cup of tea at all, some are actually awful! But that's ok, I'm sure my children's names are to your taste either. Congrats!

None of them sorry.

I like Thomasina actually, and Augusta could definitely grow on me, too. Guinevere would be an absolute no-no.

Percy - no way, ever. Ivan, yes. Joseph, yes. Ivan is my favourite.

Augusta is always domineering matriarch to me. Not a fan.

Love Thomasina.

Dislike Guinevere, but love Genevieve, which is similar.

For boys, I love Joseph.

Ivan is Ivan Milat or Ivan the Terrible (both shit associations).

Percy is slang for penis, so... Probably wouldn't go there.

Augusta: Lovely.
Thomasina: One of my favourite names. Can't use it because of my father. He hates the idea of naming children after their relatives (unless in my case, where he agreed. Irrational... grumble!)
Guinevere: nice, but not as nice as the other two. It's a bit meh/limp

Percy: very nice. Percival for the bc?
Ivan: rather nice.
Joseph: Not pretentious, but admittedly rather wet. I prefer Percy, Percival and Ivan.

Thomasina is ok but don't like the other girl names.
Joseph is ok, but I don't like Joe. Percy, no. Ivan is ok but I'm not madly keen. Sorry!

Augusta, Guinevere and Percy - sound very poncey and pretentious to me.

Thomasina - Tamsin is a diminutive. I quite like both.

Ivan and Joseph are both great. Joe is a bit meh.

Love Thomasina and Augusta. Not keen on Guinevere.

There are a lot of people on MN who don't like feminine versions of male names Hmm

Like Joseph but everyone I know is shortened to Joe. Not keen on Percy because of Blackadder or Ivan.

I like August for a girl but not Augusta for some reason, not sure why as it is only one additional letter!

Ivan for a boy.

Report
SwedishEdith · 11/03/2017 21:13

Like all the boys names - love Percy but do think it's a little boy's name, not a teenager's.

Augusta is a bit battleaxe.
Thomasina is lovely (The Return of the Native). Would you use Tamsin - thank that's the shortening?
Guinevere is bit prissy and will become Gwynne?
