Before my 20week scan I was convinced I was having a boy but scan revealed a girl and subsequent 3D scan confirmed. It actually helped me and DP as we couldn't find a boys name we both agreed on. For a girl we chose Amber Grace which we both love! However, my DP has 2 children from a previous relationship, one of which has vividly ginger hair. I'm now concerned with the name we've picked in case this little one also has ginger hair - I don't want to cause her problems at school etc. I'm now 40+3 so any day now she'll be here. What's everyone's thoughts?

Amber is a lovely name, if she's a red head it will not matter. See what you think when she gets here. Good luck, any twinges, any chance of a live birth thread? Grin

I don't think it matters. It's a lovely name.

I honestly don't think it matters. I would say that most people think of Amber as a name rather than a colour. Amber Grace is lovely.

Live birth thread would be great but she seems pretty comfy and content at the moment despite several discussions with her and telling her I'm most certainly not comfy!
Thanks for your thoughts everyone, we love the name but I know how mean kids can be so good to hear people's opinions! Smile

I was toying with Clementine for DD3 whose hair turned out to be redder than a red haired thing. So glad I rejected it on grounds that she would be forever dealing with people singing 'Oh my darling..' at her or the tyne vs teen pronunciation.

I would avoid Amber if your DD is likely to have red hair or even reddish hair.

Oooh I love ginger hair.

I don't think it matters, Amber is a beautiful name and I don't think many people will make the connection. And even if they do, I don't think it's a negative thing.

Congratulations Flowers

It's a beautiful name OP. Don't worry about what might be, it may never happen. Love red hair !

I think Amber would be extra gorgeous on a redhead! Anyway, go with what you love OP - you'll regret it if you don't.

I would have thought it would be a better name, rather than a worse one if she was a redhead. It's a lovely name.

I'm a red head and totally wouldn't mind being called Amber. It's a beautiful name. For your child to have red hair, they would have to have 2 red hair genes (one from you, one from dad). If the dad has red hair, that means he has 2 red hair genes so can only pass on red hair genes. If he has any other hair colour, then he must have only one red hair gene (which he passed to his son). That means he has a 50% chance of passing a red hair gene this time. It all comes down to whether you have any red hair in your family? If not, it's much less likely you're carrying a red hair gene. My parents both have black hair but both must have given me a red hair gene. Sorry to go all scientific and I hope that makes sense. Lol.

Amber is a truly beautiful name. Timeless.

Even more suited to a genuine redhead, IMO.

Especially for a little girl brought up to be rightly proud of her colouring...if she's happy with her gorgeous fiery locks, and confident in challenging any sad teasers from Day 1, the name itself wouldn't be negative attention, because your DD wouldn't perceive there to be any issue.

And make sure to read her lots of Pippi Longstocking Wink

She could, in fact, really "own" the name. Lot of redheads in my family, strawberry blonde myself: always remember a fabulous elderly Great Aunt (then well into her 80s) called Ruby, who, had all her life loved the fact her actual name suited her so well when tiny...

Best wishes for your DDs safe and speedy delivery Flowers

It's a beautiful name, and I think it'd be perfect for a redhead.

I honestly don't think kids in school would make the connection between the name and the hair colour. Amber would just be a name to them.

Best wishes for a safe delivery - let us know how it goes and what colour her hair is!

Bringbacksummer that's very interesting. I obviously have the red gene as our oldest son is a redhead. My husband was when he was younger and then his hair turned brown in his late teens but most of his family are redheads. I think I must have inherited the gene from my Grandmother, we just assumed that our son was a redhead because of my husband's family.

My best friend has a gorgeous red headed 9year old called Scarlett. And boy does she suit her name.

Absolutely stunning she is!

I love Amber! Would never make a connection between the name and the hair colour so don't worry.

However, my first thought when I saw the whole name was 'Ambergris' Blush

I know a ginger Amber, it is fine. My mum is Melanie, she is the blondest person I know.

I think it would be fine. One of my ds has red/auburn hair, it's a beautiful.colour.

I know a boy called Fox who has red hair. I always assumed that his parents called him that because of his hair colour, but it turns out that it was actually his mother's maiden name. It really suits him.

madisonavenue yes you must have the gene so you're 50% responsible for your son's red hair. I have 2 DC with dark hair. They both must carry a red hair gene though but there's no red hair in my husband's family so they've got a dark hair gene from him.

If two red heads have babies, they all end up with red hair.

If people are going to be dicks about your child's hair, they're going to be dicks. I like Amber.

I used to know an Amber with the most beautiful auburn hair, almost the colour of amber itself. Suited her down to the ground.
