And Silly Billy, sadly. William is a nice name though, so I'd do it anyway.

Go for William then he can be will, wills, bill, billy. Billie seems to be a popular girls name too, wouldn't bother me but once names become unisex they seem to eventually become girls names ( tainted by femaleness?) . Billy no mates would nt come to mind personally.

I to on would choose William as name, and call him Billy.

However, if you like the name Billy, call him that.

I'm pretty sure any name could be made fun of

I know a few wills and Williams all lovely. Know four Billy's and I would hide in a bush to avoid them all. In fact I once hid behind a car to avoid one of them.

In over ten years of teaching at a primary school I have never come across teasing over a name, and my teen DC tell me they've never seen it happen in their secondary, so I don't think it is the problem that MN would have you believe.
Kids just accept names, especially when they are little.

Billy is nice, go with it if you like it.

Name him William and give him options.

Billy is mega cute for both a boy and girl, I say go for it.

Thanks everyone - that's reassuring! Was planning to name him William officially, but for him to known as Billy from the beginning. Good point that this gives him lots of options later!

I have a Billy (who's actually William) and he's never had Billy-no-mates (he's 5)

William is lovely

Shouldn't the nickname for William be Willy rather than Billy..?!

In any case, I do like Billy but really don't like Will or Willy.

I guess you could always have Billiam as the long version Pip!

Lots of nicknames which are somewhat removed from the full name for some historical reason. John/Jack, Henry/Harry, Edward/Ted etc.

Billy and Bill are perfectly common shortenings for William pip along with Will and Willy (although I don't think anyone really uses the later anymore)
