Looking for some help please. Dd2 is 4 days old and I have my heart set on Nell (Penelope) but husband isn't keen (he could maybe live with Nell but not Penelope). We've contemplated and discarded Dorothy/dot, prudence/pru and Josephine. He likes Mabel and margot. Are there any names you can suggest that we may agree on?

Why not just name her Nell if you both like it, and forget about Penelope

How about Eleanor with nn Nell?

Can I suggest Martha? It's very sweet and seems similar to both your preferences.

Just call baby Nell then if you both like it?

My baby has the "nickname" version of a name. Neither of us liked the long version.

Esther? Edith? What is the other Dd called if you don't mind me asking?

I think Nell can stand alone, or use Eleanor or Helen, or variants of them.

Our other DD is Edie

Agree with other options for Nell as a nickname (Eleanor and Fenella work especially well I think). I wouldn't go with Nell as standalone as it's very marmite and there's absolutely nothing she can do with it if she doesn't like it.

Other ideas:
Annie/Anastasia
Aggie/Agatha (or Agnes)
Amy/Amelia
Bea/Beatrice
Bridie/Bridget
Clara/Clarice
Cassie/Cassandra
Cece /Cecilia
Carrie/Caroline
Edie/Edith
Elsie/Elspeth
Florrie/Florence
Georgie/Georgina
Hattie/Harriet
Hetty/Henrietta
Jude/Judith
Kate/Katherine
Kathy/Kathleen
Lily/Lillian (or Liliana)
Lucy/Lucinda
Maggie/Margaret
Marie/Marianne
Nina/Antonina (or Christiana)
Pippa/Philippa
Peggy/Margaret
Rose/Rosemary (or Rosamund/Rosalind/Rosalie)
Sylvie/Sylvia
Susie/Susannah (or Susan)
Vivi/Vivienne
Toria/Victoria
Ness/Vanessa

I would definitely go with one of Sophronia or Blinkowl's options for Nell. There are so many lovely names which can be shortened to Nell which I absolutely love as a nn. Maybe Leonora too? It's one of my favourite girl names which I would shorten to Nell if we ever had another DD.

I'm with your DH though and don't really like Penelope at all, (sorry - it's the two hard 'p' sounds I think, makes it sound all spitty to my ear).

My cat is called Nell. She came pre-named age 4 from the Cats Protection. I am disappointed to have to cross it off my baby name list! It's a great name. I like it as a standalone name.

OP how about Noelle, you could still call her Nell.
Perhaps your DH will consider this.

Edie and Nell are nickname names and go well together. I know a Frankie and Nell (full names are Francesca and Eleanor but both girls despise their full names).
