Name choice too similar to niece?

Hi just looking for some advice and opinions - we are expecting at the moment, don't know gender but we both like the name Ava for a girl, dilemma is we have a niece called Eva. Do you think the names are too similar for cousins? There will be 6 years between them, and they will both have same surname, thanks in advanced!

Yes they are too similar, but you could always hypenate Ava. I know its not everyones thing but it might be away of using the name.
Suggestions.
Ava-Grace
Ava-Jane
Ava-Rose
Ava-Mae. Yes tedious but it still flows
Ava-Belle
Ava-Nicole

Sorry to say, I also think they're a bit too similar! Especially since they'll have the same surname. The name Ava is very popular at the moment. Top 5 I believe! I wanted to call my dd Ava but I decided to go for Keira as Ava just seemed a little too popular. Your choice though, it is a lovely name x

It is nice, but very similar, especially with the same surname. How about Ada? Same vowel sounds, but you lose the v which is the main issue.

How often will they see each other? Would Eva's parents mind?

I know several sets cousins with similar names Anna/Hannah, James/Jamie, and i think it depends on the closeness of the families.

I think they are a bit too similar too, both lovely though. Following on from Polka, how about Ayda ? A more modern spelling of Ada I have seen.

My cousin has a child called Macy, my daughter is called maisie and my another cousin has just called her daughter macie. I dont think any of us really care. Maybe its because we have a large extended family and we are running out of names!

Ava and Eva are essentially the same name, with most of Europe pronouncing it Ava.

Ada is lovely though.

I'm.surprised at the answers, the usual MN line on names is no one owns them!

If they were sisters then it would be too similar. But cousins? Go for it!

Lovely name by the way.

(Please ignore the advice to hyphenate it!)

I think its fine.

Don't hyphenate though. It's horrid

ktmummy1 · 11/11/2015 11:58

I would go for it.

Depends how close you are as a family I think. If they are unlikely to see each other very often, if you don't have family get togethers then it's fine.

Avelyn?

Thanks everyone for your ideas & advice Smile yes they would see each other regularly and probably go to same school too. I also like Vaida but partner doesn't, Ada is lovely too - our daughter is called Zoe so we liked Ava with it being another 3 letter name too - we might have a boy then problem solved lol

If you're looking for 3 letter names how about
Mia
Mae
Fay
Ann
Lyn
Ana
Or indeed Ada.

Is Vaida going to sound like Darth Vader or is it pronounced differently?

Report
SteggySawUs · 11/11/2015 13:07

Mia is a lovely three letter name to go with Zoe!

Amy? I think this is pretty and relatively underused at the moment.

Yes of course Amy. I can't believe I never thought of that. My sister is an Amy. Spelt Aimee though.

Yeah it's too similar. We liked the name emmie but sil thought it sounded too similar to my niece Ellie. Decided on something different, but had a boy anyway.

Yeah Vaida is pronounced the same, that's what my husband said straight away "darth vader, no way" ha, Amy & Mia are lovely thanks, think we will stay away from Ava - I'll see what he thinks of Ada xx

I also like Nova for a girl - is that too similar to Eva too do you think?

I think Nova is different enough from Eva! Smile x

Nova is very different from Eva.
I do think Ava and Eva are too similar sounding, plus there's a lot of Avas out there!

Una and Eva

If there's 6 years between them they'll only be at the same school for a year. I'd use Ava if you love it.

I have two cousins with the same name (11 years apart though and different surname) - they have for all eternity been Big X and Little X but other than that, no problem!

I suppose Ava and Eva might create difficulties for any hard of hearing elderly relatives. But otherwise, I think it's fine.

Ava is lovely - but having said that, I like Amy even better

Very similar for cousins that will see each other regularly, attend same school and have same surname.
