Baby names

Zach (Zachary) or Max?

Ds1 due any day now, we had originally settled on a name, but family members kept referring to the baby by that name and it started to grate on me, so we are now back to the drawing board!
Narrowed it down to either Zachary or Max.
No idea which one to use now!
Any input oh wise MNetters?

Both quite trendy/widely used already.

I'd probably go with Maxmilian, nickname Max.

sorry, Maximilian.

Zachary/Zach (although I prefer Zac)

Why don't you go with the name you originally loved?

Agree that Max(imilan) and Zach(ary) are quite popular and may start to sound dated, but I think I prefer Max.

I like both, but I think Zachary.

Original name was Jacob. But a lot of people in the family kept pronouncing it Jay-cup. I'm far to pedantic to live with people mispronouncing it or shortening it to Jake consistently.

Not keen on Maximilian, seems a bit OTT? It would be Max if we went with it, just Max, which is what is swaying me more towards Zachary.

I think Jacob is lovely!

I agree OP that Maximilian is way over the top. Reminds me of some aged lizard skinned lothario scouring the casinos of Monaco for his latest conquest.

Max is fine as a stand alone name but if you wanted something longer you could go for Maxwell.

I love Jacob!

Max..meh.
Zach is alright like but doesn't wow me either. It's just...there.

Jacob is definitely not on the cards anymore, the Jay-cup thing really grates on me, as does Jake which hell inevitably be called.

Maxwell reminds me of that nasty coffee.. Maxwell house?

I adore the name Zachary! Max is nice but it does feel like it needs a longer version and I am not keen on any of them.

I also really like the name Zachariah, which obviously could also be a Zach.

I'm going to be no help as I love both names - they are my favourite boys names Smile. I think Max might edge it slightly for me though I might change my mind tomorrow. I don't think there's any need to lengthen them. I would use Max or Zach and don't see the point of using the longer versions (which I like a lot less). Interestingly, I'm not at all keen on Jacob.

Biased as I have a Zach(ary) so of course think its lovely Wink but Max is good also. I'd try and find a long version of Max that I liked rather than just Max, though, but that's just me :)

Zachary

I much prefer Max to Zachary and actually think it's fine on its own ie doesn't necesarily need a longer, full name. I don't like Zachary at all, I always think it sounds very American preppy.

I prefer Max, but Zachary is really nice as well. However, I never get this want to just have a short form of a name - half the fun in a name is being able to shorten it, whilst having a longer version to be 'grown up'!

Variations of Max:

Maximilian
Maxwell
Maxus
Macsen (Welsh), or Maxen (Anglo spelling).

I really don't think Max needs a longer form. It's more than grown up enough as it is and is nicer than any of the longer versions.

Of all the names on this thread I prefer Jacob. Good solid name.

I don't like the short forms Max or Zak at all, I find them a little cartooney sounding. And between Maximilan and Zachary/Zacharias, I'd probably prefer the latter.
