Brother for Innes

We are really struggling with boys names. Our DS1 is called Innes and I would like another Scottish name. Our surname is quite Scottish too Mac.... Any suggestions welcome!!

Blaven is interesting, myother. Is this a newly-used name? I'm collecting Scottish names and this would be a nice one to add.

Jakeybird It's the name of a mountain on Skye. Blaven or Bla Bheinn - we almost named our eldest this but chickened out - still think its a great name and it's a fantastic mountain - we have a picture of im taken with it in the background....that will have to do!

My OH is a keen Mountain walker so so a fair few of them made our list - and also Cairn and Munro and Walker :) He ended up a Craig (although OH wanted to spell it Creag or Creagh) our other son is Ciar (prn. Keir) which is Gaelic for The dark one or swarthy - he got his way with the spelling this time.

Just thought of Grant too OP.

We did at times resort to sticking pins in a map in order to find names - we had a fairly definite girls name both times (Mhairi) with a back up of Kirsty/ Coirstaidh but we were pretty sure we were having boys both times - that's probably why it was so easy to find a girls name :)

Another boys name I've come across irl is Merrick ( a hill in Galloway - technically The Merrick rather than just Merrick but I'm not sure The makes a great first name :o )

Thanks folks! Loads of lovely names there!! I love Blair but my husband has said no way! I really like Ruairidh but not sure if the best way to spell it..... We really struggled to pick Innes' name not sure how we are pick again?xx

The more I think about it, Cairn is lovely. I really like that. I do worry it will be pronounced Kieran, do you think that might happen??

As a non scot I would pronounce it like care with an n on the end (like the terrier). Not sure how you would get Kieran unless it's just an accent thing?

Oh good! It was only when I said it to my mum she said back "Kieran?" Maybe just the way she picked it up!

Some Scottish accents would make Cairn a 2 syllable word (see the thread today about the word "weans" - some posters were saying that "bairn" is often pronounced something like bay-run in some parts of the country.)

It still wouldn't sound like Keiran/Ciaran though.

Hmm, I'm the one who suggested Cairn - I'm Scottish and pronounce it the same way as BlueStars.......However, after we had mostly settled on it for No2 son, a friend with a local to where we lived at the time repeated it after me and said "Kay rin?" It put me off as we had a female friend Karin who pronounced her name exactly that way. We then changed to Ciar. It was just the local accent :( We moved a year later anyway and where we settled and raised the boys it would have been fine but we didn't know that at the time.

There are generally only one or two Cairns a year - I still look at it on the stats although I am perfectly happy with the name we chose instead.
