Baby names

Six days to go and can't decide/agree

Being induced with our rainbow boy next Friday and me and dh just can't make a decision about the name. I'm English and dh is arabic and we had a little boy who was born sleeping last year who we named Zane - which was the only boys name we could agree on.

We have come up with a short list tonight which I would like opinions on. There are some we both like but then either his side of the family don't like it or mine doesn't. I know we have made a huge mistake discussing this with the family but the damage is now done and I can't help worrying that our choice will inevitably upset someone and it is clouding my judgement (hormones are making me more than slightly emotional).

It is important for my dh Islamically that the name has a good meaning and is easy for his family to pronounce although he is happy for it to be an English name.

The short list is
Jude
Zachariah (zacki or zac for short)
Tobias (Toby)
Noah
Theo
Samuel (Sami)
Daniel

My least favourites would be Jude & Theo, but I think that's probably the best list I've seen on Mumsnet! Names v personal though. Good luck!

Sleepingstars, it is so lovely to see news of your little rainbow baby on his way! I was with you on the ttc boards earlier this year and conceived at a similar time to you (DC1 is due on Thurs) and I had wondered how you were getting on. I will be thinking of you this week and hope everything goes calmly and smoothly for you.

Re. Names, you have some lovely choices on your list! How important is it to you both that you decide on a name before your son arrives? What are the favourites for you and DH out of the list?

Your family will love the name, whatever you choose, because it will be your little boy's name.

Personally, I particularly like Daniel and Zachariah. But it would be a hard choice for me out of that list. Will be have a middle name?

Hey Barmy.

I remember you. How's your pregnancy been?? IVe had a rough ride again and my health hasn't been great. Will be 38 weeks when they induce me but they really don't want to let me go any further. And to be fair now I'll be glad too finally meet him now.

I don't mind not having a name yet - I'm still slightly apprehensive to tempt fate and would happily leave it until he is safely in my arms and home with me. Hubby has been pushing today to at least get a short list so this is what we have come up with. And seeing as we can't agree on one name there is not a hope in hell of having a middle name.

Dh has said his top 3 are

  1. Jude (which has never been mentioned until today)
  2. Tobias
  3. Zach

My top 3 are probably
  1. Zach
  2. Theo
  3. Jude?? Although this may be as dh seems really keen. I used to really like Tobias but not so keen now and wonder if this will be the same with Jude.

My mom loves Zach but his mom almost cried as she really doesn't like it (although it is a traditional Islamic/arabic name it is very old fashioned in their country). That said his mom keeps suggesting arabic names but I would like an
english name as firstly he is half English and his surname is arabic and secondly he will be raised here in the UK.

My mom pulled a face at Jude but quickly went on to say it's our choice and we should have what we like. But find it hard to be happy about a name when the nans obviously aren't keen.

My faves are Theo and Jude, both gorgeous. I like short snappy names.

Congratulations, I hope it all goes well for you. Flowers

Oh and try to ignore Crying Nan and Face Pulling Nan as much as possible and focus on the names that you and your husband love.

They had their baby naming opportunities a few decades ago and will get used to whatever name you decide on for the baby.

Hi sleepingstars,

38 weeks is a brilliant stage to have reached, and I can't imagine how much relief you will feel when you can hold him in your arms. I am sorry to hear it has been a tough pregnancy. I hope the time to Friday goes quickly for you so he is here soon.

I am fine thanks, I would just like little one to arrive now so I can see all is well. We are having a surprise so I am excited to see whether it is a boy or girl.

It is easier said than done to ignore what family members say about names. It sounds to me like you have a short list between you of
Jude
Tobias
Theo
And Zachariah/Zach
based on your favourites. Any which work best with your surname?

Our surname is a bit of a mouthful starting with El- as if often the prefix with arabic names and is then 3 syllables starting with S.

To be fair all the names work ok with it but I do think shorter names will perhaps have an easier flow.

I really love Zach, I was thinking of it before I opened the thread. I guess my only concern would be when you receive letters to Mr Z Surname and if that would be painful for you - maybe it would be the opposite though and feel like it was something they shared as brothers.

All the best for the rest of your pregnancy and the exciting naming decision.

Samuel/Sami for me!

I like all your names! My preference is for boy's names that shorten or are one syllable so Jude, Zachariah, Samuel and Daniel would be my shortlist. I think the Nans will get used to whatever name you choose. They are all great names. Good luck on the birth.

Love all your names! Jude, Tobias and Theo are my favourite. Least favourite is Zachariah, there are loads of them where I live.

I know all the grandparents would have pulled faces if we'd have shared DD's name before she was born, that's why we presented it as a done deal after birth! My dad thinks it's too posh and DH's parents think it's 'too French' (it's not a French name). However now it is just DD's name and they all love it because it's her, if you see what I mean? It's your child, like a PP said they had their chance at naming a child years ago. Go with what you love, or it will always be tainted in some way!

Jude and Theo are both great.

Had you thought of Idris? Welsh, but also Islamic! - think you'd have to love it to go for it for a first name, but Theo Idris or Jude Idris might succeed in making both sides of the family smile...
