It's an Indian name isn't it? Like the cricketer Gautam Gambhir? Sadly he doesn't have a middle name so I can't help by suggesting that - you wouldn't go wrong naming him after him ;)

ConcreteElephant It is. Don't think Gambhir will be their style but I'll add it to the list I'm writing up for them. Thanks.

Castlemilk Thanks. I think Leos on their list Smile

It might take the Indian cricketer worship a bit far :)

I like Anish, Sunar (means happy), Shiv...do they want an Indian name?

Report
guitarosauras · 26/10/2014 14:04

Apologies, I didn't realize and so probably shouldn't have presumed anything about about the name.

ConcreteElephant No, nephew will be mixed so they're looking at all names.

It's an Indian name; some of the responses seems a bit er, ignorant.

People usually are in this section, especially when it comes to foreign names.

I apologized and admitted ignorance but got ignored.

I wonder if that is what is stopping others from doing the same? Just a thought.

Well if you don't tell people that it's a foreign name and appropriate within your culture, what response did you expect?

Would it not make sense to ask people from similar backgrounds if those are the opinions you really want?

While Mumsnet is pretty diverse I would guess the majority of readers are white middle class. And to them Gautham is begging for the middle name City.

Yeah, I'm sure that's what it is.

And I don't know what kind of response you were looking for?

Would it not make sense to ask people from similar backgrounds if those are the opinions you really want?

I wanted suggestions of English names which is default on this site so didn't see the need to give any other information.

Well if you don't tell people that it's a foreign name and appropriate within your culture, what response did you expect?

Oh god yes, if only there was some sort tool one could use to look up words in seconds to avoid looking ignorant. What a miraculous thing that would be.

I have been thinking about this, based on you saying they (possibly) have Leo on their list...

I like
Gautham (do they spell it like that but still pronounce as 't'? Or do they pronounce the 'th'?) Leo - that's nice

Gautham Isaac
Gautham Daniel
Gautham James
Gautham Rory

You can hear the pronounciation: hearnames.com/pronunciations/search/gautam

They added the H (also a spelling used - not made up) because they thought Gautam would be pronounced Go-tam.
