This is very early days for us but please give me feedback for our thoughts re. girls' names at the moment.

We love Biblical names for their meanings and sense of history.

Tabitha ( my fav)
Esther (DH loves this but I'm not so keen. He's trying to win me over with using nn Tess which I love, does this work?)
Lydia
Rachel

Non Biblical ones:
Matilda
Harriet
Alice

Surname is one syllable, common, beginning with d.

Any thoughts or other suggestions welcome :)

I have one of your non biblical names for 1st dd. DC3 due next week and is going to be Tabitha - love it!

Tabitha gets my vote! It's high up on our list of possibilities too so I may be a bit biased!

Matilda is my favourite.

I also like Esther and Lydia.

Least keen on Alice and Harriet which seem a bit 'wet' to me (sorry).

Lydia

Alice, Harriet and Esther.

Matilda and Tabitha are a bit too fashionable at the moment, and Rachel and Lydia were in my class at school.

I love Esther.

My dd is nearly 9, she was christened the same day as an Esther and I've loved it ever since.

Lydia, as I have one. I also liked Hester nn Hetty. Not keen on Alice.

Esther.

Tabitha is lovely, but makes me think of Tabitha Twitchit.

Tess is a long established nn for Esther, so yes, it totally works.

I love Esther, it's on my list, although as I'm a Tess (my birth name), if I used it the nn would be Hetty.

I love Harriet (nn Hattie) too, in fact my girl bump (due September) is currently Harriet.

I'm a Harriet Alice :)

Matilda is my favourite, I love that name. Almost used it for DD3 but I have a sort of niece (actually cousin once removed but we're a close family) with the name.

I also really like Esther and Lydia and the others are quite nice too.

If you like OT names have you considered Rebekah, Abigail, Ruth, Miriam or Naomi?

I like Matilda best

Harriet and Esther - love both (but like Hester even better). Don't like Tabitha. Others all fine.

Bree: love your name! Am thinking of Alice as a possible mn...

Still probably like Tabitha the best, also love Matilda but worried about popularity nowadays. Esther is growing on me particularly with nn Tess (am a huge Hardy fan!). You don't think it's a bit dated?

Thanks for all your help!

Insomniac, really like the names you suggested but have to discount some for various reasons: Rebecca is best friend's daughter, Ruth is sis jn law, Abigail is niece, not a fan of Naomi, quite like Miriam and have considered this also..

I think Tabitha and Esther/Hester are great. Miriam, Lydia, Harriet also very nice.
If you are still wanting Biblical names, there is also Damaris, Azaria, Keziah, Martha, Salome, Sapphira, Sarah, Susannah...
