Okay so I'm due in 5 days and we've finally decided on Alex. We like the name but don't love it IYKWIM? It's the best one we're going to come up with, so we're happy with our decision.

It will just be Alex, not Alexander. What do you think?

Alex is nice. If you prefer a variation, how about Alec?

superbagpuss · 05/07/2013 12:04

okay its really popular at the moment but that's up to you

why Alex and not alexander? most people will assume its a nn

If you've decided and you're happy with it, I'm jwondering why you'd ask for opinions?

Our DD is called Beth. Most people assume it's a nn so I'm used to that. Smile
I know it's stupid but I don't like names being shortened. Is Alex popular at the moment? I didn't realise! I haven't heard of an Alex in ages. Thanks for letting me know.

I'm not keen on Alec but thanks for the suggestion.

Prefer the longer version myself. Normally I am drawn to shorter names, -and short names as nicknames, but I do really like the sound if the name 'Alexander'. (So much so that it is one of my DSes middle names Smile. I didn't want him to have it as a first name as I diidn't like Alex so much)

Bowlersarm · 05/07/2013 12:14

Incidently, an Alex we know is called 'Al' now so there's no guarantee 'Alex' is unable to be shortened.

I'm just curious about what the general opinion is really.

Our Middle DC is an Alex and he's fab, v charming and totally eccentric!

He is an Alexander, but only ever gets Alex.

All the people I've met called Alex all seem to v good looking too, as is my Alex!

DS2 is Alex (Alexander - but DH would have called him Alex like you). Ours was a compromise name - I wanted quite a few others but DH vetoed them. I love it now because it's his name. Quite often we call him Ali. It's always popular but I actually don't meet any! So I don't know where they all are Grin

Teaandcake - my Alex is beautiful! I know I would say that, but really he is. Smile

DS2 is Alex- but spelt Aleks because of having 2 nationalities.
We wanted a short name because of a double barrelled surname.

I think it's a lovely name.

Oh and of course my DS is beautiful :)

I agree that Alex's tend to be good looking. For some reason.

Loving the sound of all these good looking Alex's! Grin

I do't like names being shortened either but I like Alex as a nn

All boys Grin We have a girl Alex. I never imagined having a child called Alex, but it really suits her. Though I am guessing it is an overwhelmingly male name at the moment!

I have an Alex! His full name is Alexander though. He also gets called Alexi. We do encounter other children with the same name, but it isn't a big deal really as it's very classic.

It's nice - I find it inoffensive, and probably grew up when the name was in its heyday so prob find it a little bit dull too only for that reason. I didn't realise it was more popular now either x

Alex(ander) is the only name both dh and I like at the moment so our dc may well end up being an Alex too. It's a family name but also strong and solid I think.

I named my little brother and he's 'just' Alex. I still love it, and if I'd have had a boy I would have been gutted I couldn't use it myself! We did still get personalised gifts with Alexander on though!

I love Alexander, with Alex as a nn. I think the full name version is better though.

I've an Alexander - also very handsome Grin. He's mostly Alex or Al, simply because we moved down South and otherwise he's called Alexaaarrrnder which I really don't like, and hadn't appreciated till we got here!

I don't think it's an especially popular name - if you look on the baby name graph thing, it's always been in the Top 100 (usually Top 20), but doesn't really move up or down. We know several other Alex's, but he's the only one in his class.

I like Alex but prefer it for a girl. That is just my opinion though.

I also have a little girl whose name is traditionally a Nn, so it wouldnt bother me to have a shortning of a name as a real name.
