I really only like about 5 names but DH doesn't really like any of them so I wouldn't be happy with a name that he is not happy with iyswim!

DH's favourite name is Taliesin, now while I love the unique-ness of it, I don't think I could live with it as my son's name (especially as DSs surname is going to be a tricky double-barelled name - Polish-Welsh)

DH has suggested we just name him Tal, but again I have an issue with this. I think Tal is cute, but a bit of a 'nothing' name on it's own and I have a strong belief that you shouldn't name your child one thing then call them something else for the rest of their lives as though their original name doesn't exist (this is just my opinion so please don't slate me!).

So, 3 questions for you

  1. What are your opinions on the name Tal?
  2. Would you cast aside a belief you've had for 20 or so years to decide on a name for your DC?
  3. I would like his middle name to be Wyn (both my dad and DH's dad's names begin with Wyn) So, if we did go with Tal, do you think Tal Wyn go together as a name?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Taliesin is a great name, but I can understand your reservations. Do you live in Wales? If so, go for it. Can't say I like Tal and don't think Tal Wyn works. And I think you have to hang onto your principles!

How about Torin?

Taliesin is lovely but Tal, as you seem to acknowledge in your post, is a bit lacking. It just seems unfinished. It might work well as a nickname, as in Hal for Harry and Henry or Mal for Malcolm.

Tal Wyn sounds like one name to me but, then again, neither you nor your son will often say the two together so I wouldn't worry too much.

For what it's worth, Tal is apparently a Hebrew named that means dew. It appears to be used for both boys and girls, according to BehindtheName.com.

I like the sound of Taliesin, but I definitely wouldn't know how to spell it and would have to ask.

If the child will have a surname which it sounds as if it will be tricky to spell, do you really want him to have a first name which he'll have to spell to everyone too?

What are the other names your DH likes?

zx - that's one of the reasons I don't want to give DS a Welsh name - I don't want him hating his name just because he has to spell it at every given opportunity!

The other name DH has come up with that is ok is Iolo, but again difficult to spell if you're not Welsh.

Blue We do live in Wales, but if I had my way we wouldn't and I hope my DS will broaden his horizons (like I did) and live away at some point in his life (although if he's happy in Wales, so be it).

I put Torin to DH and he doesn't like it - I just think he doesn't like ANY name that I suggest!

Would I be right in thinking you've already been through the 'easier' Welsh names like Bryn or Dylan?

Blue We've been through every Welsh name you can think of! The other one we like is Math, short for Mathonwy or Matholwch, but DH's nephew is Mathonwy (although he is known by his middle name) so I don't think it's right to use it.

Going to have to keep looking and maybe amalgamate two names!

In that case Talwyn it is! Looks and sounds good all together.

How about Telfyn?

You may have to put your foot down and say that if your DH is insistent on a Welsh name, it'll have to be one that's easy to spell (like Morgan, Owen, Evan, Steffan or Luc).

Someone I know is called Gwilym but always goes by the name of Bill, which I like.

Hang on. You don't want to encourage DH to come around to any of the 5 names you love most because you don't want a name he isn't happy with. So you're considering a name that you aren't happy with instead??? Seems a bit one sided.

The fact you're having such a dilema over Taliesin makes it clear you aren't happy with it. Surely you both want to be happy with your son's name.

I agree with you that Tal seems a non-name. Taliesin is a great name imho. However if you would feel awkward shouting it across a crowded playground then you need to reach a compromise.
