I agree, Tess.

The long English vowel "-arna" isn't the prettiest in this case.

I have the same problem with my name spoken by English tongues grin

Love Lucianna and Lucia!
My friends dd is called Lucianna and its suits her!

TessOfTheBaublevilles Mon 19-Nov-12 10:54:21

This is my sister-in-law's name. She is Italian and the name works for her, because she has a beautiful Italian surname, and of course in her native tongue the name sounds beautiful. She didn't take my brother's name when they married, and I don't blame her at all, as Loo-chee-ah-nah + my maiden name would be awful.

Anyhow, I'm afraid to say, I don't think the name works in English. The beauty of the name is lost in our pronunciation of it.

I pronounce my SIL's name the Italian way, but even that doesn't sound as nice in my tongue, as it does her native tongue.

A beautiful name but, one that in my own personal opinion, isn't as beautiful in English.

Sorry everyone- internet problems yesterday. Thanks for the various posts, much appreciated.

It could be hormones, but I still like it- despite the possible cruise ship connotations blush

I would pronounce it Lucy-arna.

To everyone who has suggested Lucia, I've got a close family friend with one (pronounced Loo-chia). I think it is very pretty, but it feels a bit too close because of the friend and also because I honestly do prefer Luciana as being more my style <perhaps I worked on a cruise ship in an earlier liife....>

At some point, I'm going to have to post my whole (long) short list as I do think that my brain has hit the wall on names....

I love Luciana Joy! (pronounced Lucy-arna)
If I met one I would be jealous as OH has vetoed it already! Damn him.

Wishfulmakeupping Sun 18-Nov-12 08:28:20

I like it- seems I am the only one- but Lucia is a good suggestion

Luciana is beautiful. Lots of nickname potential - Lucia, Lana, Lucy

Luciana. Yes. Have a very beautiful friend with the same name.
Also like Liliana.

Hedwig3 Sat 17-Nov-12 21:13:24

My first thought was cruise liner I'm afraid.

Lucienne does not have the same effect, much nicer.

DizzyPurple Sat 17-Nov-12 17:23:36

I really like it although i have a Lucia so love that more smile

CindySherman Sat 17-Nov-12 17:18:50

Lucia much nicer.

B1ueberryS0rbet Sat 17-Nov-12 17:17:40

Love Joy

B1ueberryS0rbet Sat 17-Nov-12 17:17:04

I agree, bit too long. It's beautiful but it suits a cruise liner. Very good.

Lucia is plenty.

PoppyAmex Sat 17-Nov-12 17:15:16

It's relatively popular in Brazil/Portugal. Wonder how it would be pronounced in the UK though.

RosannaBanana Sat 17-Nov-12 17:13:04

Sorry, a bit OTT imo sounds like a cruise liner

How about Lucia?

NotChristmasCarol Sat 17-Nov-12 17:08:17

I'm still floundering around with names. I met a Luciana today and thought it sounded very pretty- I know it will be too frilly for some, but I'm ok with frilly.

Or Lucienne.

Neither have come up on the L names thread so I thought I'd ask....

(middle name wil be Joy)
