I like it. A classic name.

I like it, and it makes me think about the song from War of the Worlds

Love it. I believe it means "gift from God" in Hebrew.

(Nathan/Natan = gift)

Yes in fact that song is where I got it from, I have wanted a little boy called Nathaniel since the first time I heard it.

DH hates it! But he cant think of anything so he is on a losing battle as D Day draws nearer, unless it is a girl of course.

What about Nathan or Ethan as a compromise? Would he like those. I am singing that song now and probably will be all week. Cheers for that :)

No, he doesnt like Nathan, its one of his comments, that it will get shortened to Nathan or Nate.

Ethan - we know too many, other DS was nearly called Ethan.

This is my last baby (I am ancient too!!).

I have told DH to start thinking of names - because he needs to think of something else, I am stuck on this one, no matter how many baby name generators I use.

Why don't you come up with some really hideous names, pretend you love them, and when he is suitably horrified suggest Nathaniel again :)

I wanted DS to be called Nathan I love the name but I stupidly married for love and not a decent last name so it didn't go :(

I LOVE IT thank you. I'm going to rake out my WOTW cd later and have a listen.

I know a 20 yo Nathaniel and he's never been called anything else.

One of the nicest people in the world, if you're looking for positive associations!

It was between Nathaniel and Joshua for my DS1

Lovely name. Can be contracted of changed in so many ways - Nate, Nathan, all sorts. Total classic unlike Alfie etc which will date. Lovely name. Could always have your DH's choice as a middle? That's what we did?

I am more determined now, DH will come around (because he cant think of anything else!)

Also YOU are doing the birthing thing. DH was all 'no I don't like that name'. Squeezed out DS2, all tearful and wan, I could've called him Deathstar Faloola and DH would've gone along with it.

Like it.

PMPL at Deathstar Faloola

And how can DH argue against the combined unanimous agreement of mumsnet Grin

Really nice, solid, timeless name.

And I think Nate is a great nickname.

izzy: What is it about Nathaniel that your husband doesn't like?

Hubby was absolutely opposed to the named Edith when we were considering girls names (I absolutely love the name Edith). At some point he admitted he hated the soft "th" sound at the end.

We ended up going with another old, but not too retro name in the same genre as Edith, but without the "th".

It was one of our favourites if DD had been a DS2. Not keen on Nate as a nickname but DS has a similar type of name (only one letter shorter) and at age 5 he started insisting on being called the full version rather than the nickname we used.

bigbluebump · 05/11/2012 06:47

It wouldn't be my choice, mainly because it will inevitably be shortened and I'm not keen on Nat or Nate.

But you say your dh hates it... I think you should find a name you both love.

I love the name Nathaniel. A friend of a friend I knew called this shortened it to Nat.

But I do think you've got to use a name you and your DH both at least like.
