Eliza - last year's highest climber

According to ONS, Eliza was the highest climber on the girls' names list. This is what they actually say:

Eliza, which rose 31 places between 2010 and 2011 to 62, was the highest climber within the top 100.

Would this fact put you off choosing a name?

Oh yes, it's certainly a lovely name. But I think it would put me off a bit in case it became the next Jessica/Olivia/whatever is super popular just now. People latch onto names generally because they do seem nice, but the Holy Grail is a name that's appealing but not over-used.

I have been trying to find this elusive name - the Holy Grail - but I am just not clicking with any of these under-used names. On our short list at the mo are: Thalia, Stella, Vanessa, Cassia

Thalia is absolutely lovely and under used in most areas (popular in north London).

I have an Eliza and have never met another. She is 22months.

I would only be put off a name if I knew others irl or it was top ten.

If it makes you feel better, I am a teacher and there are 1200 pupils in my school. In 9 years of being there I have never met an Eliza.

My Eliza is 5. I have met one age 7 and one age 2.
Damn it, it was ranked about 160 when I used it, I am not top 100 name sort of person!
Hmmm, wish it wasn't climbing so fast but it is a beautiful name!
Go back to ONS and look at total number of each name.
I think the top 20 have thousands each year, but by the time you get to position 60, it's hundreds.

Ds has a normal unusual name, there were 18 with his name his year.
I printed out their stats for their year of birth for their keepsake boxes (I'm odd, I know).
Well, I must be psychic about Eliza, I guess I wanted to prove to her I was the trend setter

I remember reading a similar stat about Alfie many moons ago...... We're overrun with them around here!

Yes I think it would put me off, but it is a gorgeous name. I am having a little boy but before we found out Stella was one of my top contenders for a girl, I love it.

I think Eliza is beautiful, if you love it don't be out off by it climbing like that. I loved Evie since the tv series House of Eliot and by the time I got my Evie, it was number 10. I've not met another her age so far, but quite a few Eva's. There was a girl aged about 6 at a soft play who took a real shine to my Evie when she discovered they had the same name, she thought it was great and was telling everyone about big Evie and little Evie. So the kids really don't care as much as we do! Go with your heart x

Eliza is very popular here. Like Matilda seemed to be a couple years ago, though I don't know where that is according ONS

It would put me off. I do love Eliza and it would be a name I would love to use but my dds middle name is Elizabeth. My two children both have names that have become very popular over the years and I find it annoning. I loved Amelia right up until my DD was born but didn't use it because it was overused.

I really don't get the concept of not using a name you love just because it is popular. I was one of 5 Lauras in my year at school, didn't bother me one jot; I love my name.

qumquat I guess I am the opposite to you, in that my name is rather unusual and I really like/liked that. I know a lot of Sarahs, for example, and, while it is a pretty name, it was obviously SUCH a popular name back in the late 70s/early 80s. Plus, as a teacher, I see all too often 2/3/4 children with the same name in the same class - and I do feel a bit sorry for them. Of course, your name is never truly unique (unless it is something completely made-up or outlandish), but it helps if you don't share your name with multiple others in your class/work place/social group.
