What else can this be short for?

Meg. Really like this simple name but if we used it would like to have a longer version. I know it can be a nn for Megan and Margaret but anything else?

Maybe Margot? It's a bit of a stretch though.

Oh, please go for Margaret! So unusual and elegant- so may lovely shortenings!

Other forms of Margaret, I suppose, like Marguerite.

Possibly Meredith, at a push?

Maybe:
Magda
Magdalena
Magnolia
Marigold
Marguerite
Madeleine

The further you go from Margaret and Megan, the more tenuous you get.

If you like Meg but not Margaret or Megan, name her Meg.

Otherwise, why not pick a name you like and would like for her to have on her birth certificate and call her Meg? 'This is my daughter Emma; we call her Meg.' Plenty of nicknames have nothing to do with the person's given name.

Or give her Meg as a middle name? Or, 'This is my daughter Sarah Meg; she goes by her middle name.'

Or call her something like Matilda Eve Grace - M.E.G.

Probably best to avoid Megane.

Thanks for your responses everyone.

Stellan - In your opinion is Meg a standalone name? I do like Megan but was under the impression it has been super popular over the last few years and perhaps now is sounding a bit jaded - would you say this is this case?

Personally, I tend to incline to more formal names rather than diminutives but there are enough people in the media/literature who go so exclusively by Meg it might as well be their given name:

One of the Little Women
Meg Cabot (wrote The Princess Diaries, born Meggin)
Meg Ryan (actress, born Margaret)
Meg Tilly (actress, born Margaret)
A character in The Phantom of the Opera
A character in Family Guy
Meg White from The White Stripes

I'd probably rather be a Marguerite or Margaret or Megan, nicknamed Meg, but since Meg is quite 'strong sounding' (like a Jane or a Pearl or a Claire or a Ruth) and isn't particulary cutesy (as, say, Meggie would be), I don't think it'd be a bad name to have as an adult at all.

I have a Meg - a name I wanted for years before she arrived. I stupidly let DH talk me into calling her Megan, to be shortened to Meg, when she was born. She is now 9, and has asked me if we can officially change her name to be Meg instead of Megan and I think we probably will do this before she starts secondary school. Although I don't dislike the name Megan, I don't love it, and I don't feel she is one (and it seems, neither does she!)

I have a Meg, short for Margaret. She's nearly 14 now and I still love it. More importantly she loves it too. The only downside is lots of people call her Megan. Now that she is older this is less of an issue as she herself will correct them. I think it would stand alone also. We only went with margaret as it was my grandmother's name. She has always been called Meg. Go for it, great name!
