Anneliese?

Would like to hear your opinions on Anneliese - also re the spelling, is this the 'correct' spelling or would you go for another version.

Any similar suggestions welcome too.

I have a very dear friend called Anneliis. She is Estonian but her mother always says it is a Dutch name.

Annelies/Annelise/Annaliese are all acceptable spellings.

Lieselotte is also very nice.

I have no connection to the Netherlands etc but seem to like their names Anya and Erica also on the list but Anneliese my favourite.

Annalise is a much easier spelling ... I want to avoid it looking like 'anal' so thought maybe the 'anne' bit looked better.

Anya is simply a nickname for Anne.

Annemie (short for Anne Marie) is very popular, although a bit out of date.

The 'e' is pronouced at the end in dutch.

Thanks belgo, that pronunciation is nicer than the one you'd get in the UK which I think is Anna-leese - or at least that's how I pronounce it!

Id like a name that works well in lots of languages, like Anna, Maria, Sara, Laura do etc so I hope Anneliese fits into that bracket.

Laura has a different pronunciation in dutch, more 'low-ra- with the 'low' to rhyme with 'ow' (the ow from ouch)

Is Anneliese a name that's used for children much over there or is it more middle aged / out of fashion now.

I don't think I know any children called Annelise, the only Annelise I know is in her forties. But in my opinion that doesn't really matter, because the dutch/flemish names that are in fashion now for children are very ugly, and difficult for foreigners. Or simply very plain.

Adelheid, nickname Heidi, is very pretty, but might be a bit difficult.

In Belgium, two syllable names for girls are very popular: Jara, Jada, Minna, Lotta.

And for boys, one syllable names such as Grimm.

DH swedish cousin is called Annalisa, another alternative with a similar sound/pronunciation.

I had a friend at school called Anneli (pronounced Anna Lee) - never met another. She was never Anna either.

I know an American Annelies (not sure of the spelling), it does transfer to other countries reasonably well.

I know an Annaliese (German origin) pronounced anna-lees. Also know a Lysianne pronounced Lee-see-ann.

I know 4 German girls called Annaliese - pronounced Anna-lee-suh. All in the 3-7 age group, all living in Berlin. So it's maybe viewed as a cool 'old lady' name, similar to Winifred etc here.

Lieselotte is fab. I know one called Lilo for short. Also Pippilotte, which is funky but we decided against it because I had the association 'peepees alot' as in piddles a lot. Which is no doubt me and my dirty mind.
