Hi all. I'm new to this site and love this thread!

Was reading a few old posts from years back and came across a 'Bogan name' thread. DS's name was on it and i wondered what a Bogan name is?

DS has a very uncommon name (well where i'm from anyway) and has never been used on this board until i saw this!

According to my Aussie chums, bogan is sort of Aussie equivalent to 'common'. Oh how I amuse myself sending them links to a local carpet shop by the name of 'Bogan's Carpets'! Grin

Yeah, it's the Antipodean equivalent of chav. :-/ Maybe not what you wanted to hear - but don't forget that bogan/chav is entirely in the mind of the observer and this does not actally mean anything.

I'm sure you've chosen a lovely name for your DS.

FWIW, my DS's name was on the Twitter list of ugliest names - you can't please everyone, so you might as well please yourself. Wink

Thank you :)

Wow never thought of it being a 'chavvy' name! Haven't met any other kids with his name!

He's just over 3 months and i still love it :)

I'd never heard the term - that's my new thing learned for the day. We'll probably end up with a baby names thread that goes something like:

What do you think of

Nah, Bogan.

Oooh yes Bogan is a much better name! Thanks!

I'm Australian and it is used in the place of chav. Bogan is only in the eye of the beholder though and I wouldn't worry about it :).

Grimma - You never know, Bogan could become the new Jack, Harry etc.

Stealth - Thank you :) i love his name, even if it does get mixed reactions or pronounced incorrectly!

In my experience, examples of bogan names are Riley, Rogan, Troy, Jai.

Wayne, Shane, xxxx-Rae, pretty much anything that ends in and "een" sounds as that sounds dreadful with an Aus accent, Darren, Sharon (Dazza and Shazza), made-up names, misspelt names. Similar to the English concept of "common" names, but with an element that is uniquely Australian.
