How many Harry's are really out there???

How many little Harry's have you met in recent months? Currently expecting DS2 and struggling to find a name that we love. DH is pushing for Harry - which we would probably shorten to Hal - but I'm worried that every second child we meet might be a Harry too! We like traditional names but if I was brave enough I would probably choose something really 'out there' instead! DS1 is Fred, was almost Huxley but I chickened out in the end so he has that as a middle name...... Help!

I don't think I know a single Harry - of any age - IRL.
And only one Tom, but quite a few Dicks.

Mine is the only Harry in his year. I know of one other who is one of my best friends babies.

I love the name Harry!

There are loads around here, and it's in the top 5 of names all over the country (has been for the last few years), so your son will definitely be one of many.

Out of 7 babies in my NCT class, 2 were called Harry, and in my other baby group of about 12 babies, another 2 were called Harry. Plus I've heard it shouted at soft play numerous times.

see here for actual stats, IMHO much more accurate than asking random people how many Harrys they've met: www.baby-names-guide.co.uk/top-100-baby-names.php

About half a dozen between school and friends.

However, if you like a name does it really matter?

My DS is called Harry (he is 9) and the only one in his school.

When he was a baby it was cute, as a 9yr old it's cool and will be just as fab when he is a grown up!

Plus, Fred and Harry sound good together :-)

Thanks all! We are in Scotland and although I know a couple of older Harry's, so far I haven't met any other little ones! Just keep seeing it on the dreaded 'most popular name' lists.... But I guess if we love it then it doesn't really matter!

My Harry was born is Scotland and there were no other Harry's at his nursery or school there either.

Do let us know when 'Harry' arrives!

What about Harrison? Our ds2 was Harrison for two days before we settled on jack

I still love Harrison and Harry but out ds 2 didn't look like either. He's a sturdy jack!

I know reams of them. Every second boy baby announcement on Facebook is a Harry. The others seem to be Josh.

Harrison is to be avoided too.

I have a Harry, he is 8, same as Lilyloo, 3 in our school. He has always been the only Harry in his preschool/class/group of friends. My friend has a Thomas and in her group of mates he is one of about 5.
It is very regional I think.
I had no idea Harry was popular when we chose it, but I still love it and he suits his name.

As a teacher in primary I have had at least 1 if not 2/3 Harry's in my class consistently for the past 6 years. All of them have been characters, the first one I taught was such a cheeky chappie loved him to pieces he will be on stage in a few years.

Ha! Don't joke, I love Huckleberry! Just think I might be setting the poor child up for a life of misery....
Thanks for all the comments, seems that Harry will always be popular, will keep my ears open for the next few months and see how many pop up around here. Have 3mths to properly decide anyway!

I know lots of Harrys but my DD also has a very popular name and I don't mind at all .... I think you'll find that when your baby is born you won't care what other kids are called and will go with the name you like regardless Smile
