Angharad - how do you pronounce it?

I have heard it pronounced both Ang-har-ahd and Ann-Harad.

I've always pronouced it Ang-har-ahd, the same as my Welsh DH's pronounces it. He may not be correct.

The g is quite soft, so perhaps in English accent Ann Harrad is better?

"ng" is a letter in Welsh, you say it as as you would say the "ang" part of "angst"

Definitely a hard "d" at the end. Are you thinking of the letter "dd" which is like a hard "th" eg at the end of Dafydd?

I pn it Ann Harad. I live in S Wales and know someone with this name who pn it like this, and also another one who lives in N Wales who pn it like this (although I don't know if she's actually from N Wales).

Sorry I completely disagree with that sentiment. If everyone avoids names which the English find difficult then that's the death of Welsh / Scottish / Irish culture in action. Please can I remind you that this is the United Kingdom, which is made up of distinct countries with their own culture and traditions, not just England!

And anyway, if the English have learnt to cope with Siobhan, Niamh, Sian etc, why not Angaharad next?

I looked after an Angharad (shes 7 now), her mum told me that it was suppose to be pronounced Ang - Harrod, but that it was ok to say it like Ann - Harrad. You really do have to pronounce the H in the middle tho. As a shortened name i find myself calling her 'Harr' now that shes older. I dont think its an easy name to shorten tho she sometimes gets 'Harry' and other times is 'Ang-ey'. Also when i used to have to say her name at groups we went to so many people used to think i was saying her name was Anne and her surname was Harrod, no one ever knew how to spell it either. I do hear of it a bit more often now tho.

I completely disagree. Our local primary school has children from all nationalities and yes, you do have to ask how some are pronounce - but how lovely to have such a variety of names with such different backgrounds.

Angharad is lovely, Ann or Angie would be cute nicknames.

The one I know is Ang for short. A piece of art she did at nursery once came back with 'Anne-Harriet' written on by the teacher.
