I can't find anyone to ask who's been through it.

I'm A&E again today and he needs surgery. The surgeon said the pain after is "Bad. Very bad."

Now want you want to hear. My baby is only 6 months and already in pain.
I'm dreading it.

(I realise this is autoimmune forum but I know anal fistulas can be a symptom of some AI disorders)

no love! i'm so sorry but I have no idea what you and your baby are going through, poor little old love, the only thing I would say though is that at this age your baby wont remember the procedure/pain etc.

just take care of you and baby and things will come right xx

Bumping this for you, OP, but wondering if you might be better to post it on Children's health or even General Health. (If you haven't already.)

My niece was born with VACTERL, not sure if you've heard of it. She had various anomalies at birth but not the anal fistula that some VACTERL kids are born with, so I don't know what you're going through but I'm sure it must be extremely upsetting and anxiety-provoking at times and you're probably wondering how you're going to get your little one through his recovery post-surgery. All I can say for sure is you will and you'll be surprised at how resourceful you'll be at helping him be as comfortable as possible. Just if you have any doubts at all tell the hospital, be open with them about any misgivings you might have about coping with his recovery, let them help you. And I'm guessing you have a health visitor? If so, tell them you feel you need extra support once you get him home. If you haven't still got a health visitor supporting you with him, kick up a fuss.

My niece had an esophegeal fistula repair when she was just 3 days old, and a heart valve surgery a few days later. Her mum and dad had no idea until she was born that she was going to need anything like that, they were expecting a 'healthy' baby. Then just before she turned one she had heart bypass. She's now 6 and a half and doing ever so well, fingers crossed. So try to focus on the future you've got planned for your baby boy while he's going through all this, you can both get there Flowers
