Curtain Lining - would this work?

I bought six pairs of curtains for my very wide windows - the plan is to sew them together. Bought them for a song in a sale, but they're really too light, a polycotton mix, and given the number of curtains, I am reluctant to spend much on lining them....

Is it possible to:

  1. Line them with curtains - I have the perfect pair of the same size, and I really hate the pattern - could I just sew these together at the header?

  1. Does anywhere sell extra wide lining? All I can see is 54/55" but my curtains are 90" each

  1. Is there a cheaper alternative to Dommett which willl give a similar look?

I am trying to stop the cost run over £100, but so far without any luck

thanks

I've always lined thin curtains with blackout fabric, but that's not a cheap option, especially if you use ready-made linings.

Are you sure you want to sew them together? It could make for a very heavy curtain. I'm sure the rail could take the weight, but possibly the fabric of the curtain would not cope with pulling all that weight as you draw them.

The lining curtains are a slightly wider and coarser weave, but combined they dont weigh more than my current Next curtains, which felt too stiff and billowy for the job...

Surely they wont weigh more than the if the curtain were attached to interlining? Or can a curtain be too flimsy to support a lining?

what sort of header/curtain track do you have - pencil pleat for curtain hooks, just hang the lining curtain from the lining holes on the track sliders, no need to join them together, a pole and eyelets would be harder I guess (I don't have any that type so can't visualise).

That is one big window OP! Are they pencil pleat at the top? is the fabric plain or patterned? and are these permanent or a temporary solution?

TBH I would hang them all and see how full they look once up, they might look better than you think due to the sheer volume of fabric.

If they look OK then I would be tempted to sew the heading together at each join only (right sides together so that the curtains are encouraged to hang in such a way that the gap is not so obvious) that way you can open and close the curtains as you would do a normal pair. You also avoid having to faff about avoiding sewing the actual lengths together.

To add to this you could try and get detachable linings, they hook over the curtain hooks (or they used too, I guess you can still get them?).

I have too many large windows so I feel your pain. I have better luck when I look up patio or sliding doors curtains/blinds (U.S.)

Maybe next direct (nextdirect.com) will have something. I don't think the pricing is too bad either
