Decorating Felt Cloggs

OK, I have insanely decided to decorate a pair of plain white felt clogs for my mother. I have some beads and stuff and I trying to decide how best to fix them on. I do think sewing would be the best option but am open to suggestions.
If I sew what thread would be good? Should I go for some clear 'invisible' thread? I suspect a small curved needle would be the best to use.
I also have a vision of spirals made with some coloured wire I have, I think they might be best sewn on, sort of couched I think.
There was a vague thought that I might paint them but I think the felt would just suck up the dye and then never dry and I couldn't 'fix' it so they would run in the rain!
I think I'm mad but having bought the clogs and the bits and bobs I'd better complete the project or OH will get stroppy!

hello never, you can sew into heavy felt, I would use NYMO beading thread as it is very strong and light.

you could applique felt shapes on with thread.

i agree about the paint, and I think even fabric pens might be difficult.

if you sew, you might be able to pass the needle just under the first layer of felt IYSWIM, to save having to go through several layers at once.

good luck.
