Dating scan - I’m convinced there is no nose

I am 13 weeks and have just had my dating scan. I know many people have these thoughts but there is no nose visible on the scan whatsoever. (Sorry I do not wish to post the picture). Also you cannot see the legs on the scan as they have been cut out. It is a very very close up view which is so different to all the other scan pictures I’ve seen online. The sonographer was not friendly at all but said everything was ok. Is there anything I can do? I have had my bloods taken and I’m awaiting the results for downs etc. I don’t believe this is just me being anxious, it looks very clear on the scan that there is no nose at all and I now picture myself panicking until the 20 week scan.

The first scans are so unclear though. You can’t really make out much. I’m sure if there was an issue you would have been made aware.

Scan pictures are unclear.
Ring your midwife and discuss it with them. I'm sure they will be able to reassure you.

Have you looked at the report they put in your notes afterwards? I'm sure it says 'nasal bone present', if it is, for the 12-week scan. They really would've picked up on something like that and told you! Probably just a funny angle. Baby is still so small at that point.

My first looked like he had far too many toes in the scan! Sometimes they just look a bit odd to the untrained eye. As PP said check your notes and see what it says. Hope it’s all fine!

Mine looked like the scream 😱 he turned out fine.

Not trying to dismiss your worries but these scan pictures can look very obscure

Do you really think they wouldn’t have mentioned the fact that your baby had no nose?

It is just you being anxious. How much formal medical training in sonography have you had? Do you really, in your heart of hearts, think that you know better by looking at a grainy scan photo than the person with the medical equipment and training actually doing the scan?

Thanks for all your replies and reassurance. My notes don’t reference the nose at all and do not say ‘nasal bone present'. I had read online that the NHS no longer look at the nasal bone at the dating scan? If the nasal bone was not mentioned to me specifically and is not mentioned in the notes, should I assume there is definitely not an issue with it? Or is it more a case of this will be picked up at my 20 week scan?

Assume there’s not an issue. If there was an issue they would tell you.

All my scan photos looked really odd and to be honest the 20week and the one I had to have at 30+ weeks for growth issues had me convinced DS was severely deformed.
All through my pregnancy and labour I was secretly terrified as I didn't dare mention my worries and when DS was born I braced myself if I'm totally honest.
He was absolutely perfect. I'd had myself in knots of anxiety for nothing.Smile

Please try to trust the professionals, if there was no nose, there would be other problems too, which would be picked up on a scan. Have you ever heard of a person born who was perfectly fine but with no nose?

They are trained to check all the vital points that show a baby is growing well and has everything in order. If they said it all looks okay then try to trust them.

The scans I had looked nothing like the ones I have seen online where baby is clear and on their back, they were very odd! I am sure that the sonographer would have mentioned it, I am pretty sure DS's just looked like a black triangle in one.

My daughters 13 week scan looked like she had a reallyyyy long pointy nose. She came out with a cute little button nose, I wouldn't worry.

Just looked at my dd's baby's 12 week scan OP - can't see a nose nor any legs! No reported problems - I'm assuming fine. Bless you, it's so easy to worry, isn't it? Flowers Congratulations!

It is just you being anxious. You are not a sonographer. They are not clear photographs. I have had three babies, and a large number of scans, and the images have had a varying degree of clarity. Some have had what looks like limbs missing, some have just looked like aliens.
All my children have the current number of limbs and facial features.

I am not joking when I say my youngest scan picture looked like the demon from insidious - she was absolutely perfect when she came out and completley adorable. Scan pictures are bizarre and very unclear, if the sonographer had seen anything out of the ordinary they would have told you.
