Waiting for CVS result and going a bit crazy

Hi everyone. I'm 40 and this is my first pregnancy. I spent the first 12 weeks worried about mmc and when I got to my 12 week scan I was so relieved to see a gorgeous little baby in there. However the relief was pretty short-lived as the NT measurement taken was 3.8. With that and my age I was given a 1 in 5 risk of Down's syndrome (Edwards'/Patau's at 1 in 372).

I had a further scan on Friday (13+5) at the fetal medicine unit at Birmingham Women's and the doctor checked heart, brain, abdomen, skeleton etc. and couldn't see any abnormalities. NT measurement was slightly lower at 3.2 but still recommended the CVS. Procedure was fine but now I'm anxiously waiting for the phone call with results (today or tomorrow) and going a bit mad. Please help!

Just sending you a hand hold.
Try to think positively. The 1 in 5 stat you’ve been given is going to be highly evidenced by your age as it’s one of the measurements they rely on.

Thanks so much. I am relieved to say the call just came so I didn't have to wait much longer, which is good as I was feeling dizzy. I have the all clear for Down's, Edward's and Patau's. It's such a relief Grin I know there are other very rare conditions that I have yet to hear about but this was the biggie.

Thanks both. I think I'm in shock, I spent so much of this morning mentally preparing for bad news. No one told me being pregnant was going to be like this! What a rollercoaster xx

Wonderful news. Flowers
I had a similar nervous wait when I was pregnant with my son.
It’s very hard but I think you need to try to chill now - you deserve it! Have a nice meal and do something you enjoy this evening.
Since having DS I regret not doing a bit more with my freedom before he arrived and enjoying pregnancy more.
Sending you good vibes x

That's great news👍🏻I am now in similar situation. I'm 38 and 15 weeks, NHS test was last week and I got letter on sat saying high risk for Down's. I've hardly slept since. I have an appointment at hospital tomorrow to discuss results. I know they prob will suggest amnio, but I'm nervous of that. Do you think the high risk is a lot to do with my age?

Thinking of you both Laura and TinyTerror. We're currently waiting on our wider amnio result (after initial clear call for downs/Edwards/patau) and so I know the waiting is just the pits. But you're not alone. We've really tried to count our stars that we live somewhere that finding out this info is even an option. It doesn't always soothe my anxiety but in my calmer moments, I can appreciate that we are lucky to have access to these tests. (For us, of course - I totally appreciate others find strength in other ways and prefer not to go down this route). x

Hi laura and thirtyone! Today I got my results from the full chromosome check and that was all clear too, such a relief! Hope you get the same result, thirtyone, and don't have to wait too long. Trying not to worry now as the doctor did such a thorough scan before the CVS so hopefully the anomaly scan won't turn up anything unexpected. Easier said than done though!

Laura, it's hard to say. My age related risk was 1 in 108, apparently, which is higher risk in itself, but I don't know what the risk is at 38, it could well just put you in the higher category. Did you get an NT measurement? It sounds like you were maybe a bit late as I think the cutoff is 14 weeks.
They may offer you the non-invasive test (NIPT). Because of my baby's NT measurement, there a higher risk of all sorts of chromosomal conditions that wouldn't be picked up by the NIPT. The clinic I went to said the risk of miscarriage from CVS was only 0.5% (I don't know if this is specific to the clinic? They are one of the best in the country) so it seemed low enough that I felt the risks were worth it to be confident of a healthy baby. The doctor really gave me confidence as well, I felt I could trust them there. There's no way I could have waited until the anomaly scan because I'm such a worrier, but as thirtyone said I have every respect for people who can do that.
It's such a tough time. I really hope your appointment goes well and you get some reassurance xx

@laurabmummyof3 Just saw your other post about your NIPT and CUBS results. I would say that the high risk you've been given is likely based on your age if you have already had the NIPT and that is low risk. Talk to them at your appointment about the fact that you've already had the NIPT. They may say there's no need for amnio after all. Fingers crossed for you xx

hi all, am in a very similar boat and this wait for results is driving me up the bend. I had panorama (NIPT) done at almost 10 weeks (clinic in London do them from 9 weeks) and all came back very low risk. I then had bloods done a couple of weeks ago and my dating scan was last Friday. The scan looked perfect apparently - NT only 1.6 - but I came out as high risk (1 in 19!) due to my age (38) and free beta HCG (3.11 MoM)/PAPP-A (0.38 MoM).

I opted to have CVS yesterday and should get the results this week. This waiting is giving me too much time to Google and worry (and cry). I didn't tell the hospital I'd had private panorama tests done because I was going to get them through the NHS as well. Was hoping that I'd get low risk from private panorama, NHS panorama AND the combined tests so I could finally relax.

Can't stop worrying about this 1 in 19 number. We would terminate if there was a big problem which I am just so worried about. So thankful to find threads like this for comfort. Just praying for good news.

Thank you tinyterror. 💕Consultant happy with nipt result and says disregard Cubs and mainly based on my age. ( and I'm just below the cut off between high/low) I'm much happier this afternoon. 😍

TKR I was in similar situation as you, but saw consultant this morning and he said that my private nips test ( which is prob same as what you've had) supercedes NHS test. As private test uses babies DNA and NHS just uses markers and percentages. He said with just NHS results he would've suggested amnio but with the private test results he wouldn't. Sounds like to me that you're results are similar. Good luck, I think you and baby will be just fine.🍀💕

@laurabmummyof3 just thanks for your support and also interest to know what your bloods were (MoM values if you have them)? That's what threw my result as she isn't terrible (38) and the NT was only 1.6.

I'll find out CVS results tomorrow. Hubby focusing on NIPT result but I'm still anxious af! Xx
