Potential silly question about early ultrasounds and gender

Why does our 12 week (11wk3) ultrasound say female? Obviously they haven't sexed it yet, is that the default reading until they know otherwise?

I can't imagine why you'd need to have a record of the mother's gender.

It's definitely your gender.

This definitely refers to you. Ultrasound machines are used for many investigations on both sexes so in the patient demographics the gender of the patient is also recorded.

The ultrasound machines require standard information like the patients sex to be entered in regardless of the scan being performed.
