10 weeks scan & NT concern...

Hi all,

I went for my dating scan on Tuesday and they told me I was only 10+4 (I guessed we weren't as far along as predicted as we conceived immediately after stopping the pill).

Anyway we got to see baby and a heartbeat and very wriggly legs! It was lovely to finally see a pic of him/her.

The ultrasound lady did was that they didn't usually see babies so young and there was cause a possible for concern of the NT of 3mm and a possible 'cystic hygroma' but will go back at 12 weeks to re-scan. If there was any concern at 12 weeks I would be referred to a specialist unit.

I saw the midwife afterwards and she said that they shouldn't have measured as it was too early (no bloods taken and no official measurement taken just a comment). She said the baby could grown and the NT shrink...or not. The consultant also popped in at the request of the midwife as they could see we were concerned. She said 'I wouldn't loose any sleep over it'....

Has anyone ever had an early scan and had similar comments? I know the NT isnt the be all and end all of a babies health but there seems to be a lot of emphasis on this at the moment in scanning...

Obviously we will just have to wait it out for another 2 weeks and see what happens then but I can't help but worry...

I don't have any experience in that area.

I do have experience of doctors being concerned and breaking bad news. I would take them at their word tbh, if it was in any way an indicator this early they'd be trying to do some more investigation.

I guess there is a very good reason that there is a 'window' for nt measurements in that ones don't at other times are very inaccurate. 2 weeks is a long time in the gestation of a baby that big.

I know it will be really hard not to worry but please try not to. I'd be a bit pissed at the sonographer tbh, they really shouldn't have said anything to you.

Thank you Kitty. I am a little annoyed and the midwife did seem to be overly supportive of the sonographer which leads me to believe she also thought that she shouldn't have said anything...

Just wanted to update everyone on here as to our latest news and to inform any others who may have gone through a similar experience.

We went for our 12 week scan today (rescheduled as baby was younger than initially thought, hence our 10 week worry!).

We had a different monographer and I didn't mention anything about the findings of the last sonographer (she seemed unaware that we had been 2 weeks earlier). She performed NT measurements and I asked if there was nothing to be concerned about....no :-)

I then told her the story from 2 weeks prior and she said there was absolutely nothing of concern that she had seen and that the highest NT she had gotten from today was 1.9mm :-)

So baby bean is doing just fine :-)

Thank you all for your support during this tough 2 weeks, hopefully we can now enjoy the rest of the pregnancy!

So glad for you and baby bean. There must be a reason why NT is not measured before 11w+2d. Shame you had to go through 2 weeks stress...
