Delay in amnio results - bad sign?

Hi everyone, I had my amnio 7 days ago and they said to expect the initial results within 3 working days (with full set of results in a week or two).

I hadn't heard anything by tues afternoon so I rang up and the clinic rang the labs to see why they weren't back.

Apparently the sample is taking longer than usual to cultivate. The lady I spoke to said this isn't necessarily a bad sign but I am so worried that something is wrong and they are letting it grow more than normal to 'make sure'.

Has anyone else experienced a slow sample? What was the outcome? I am making myself I'll with all the worry :-(

Ah bless you, I've no experience, but am bumping for you, I'm sure it's nothing sinister though. Good luck x

Hi, I really don't think it's necessarily a bad sign. I think some just take longer to grow than others. I think my results took about average but I remember them saying beforehand that they couldn't give an exact time as some take longer than others.

I was in your position 18 years ago. Something had gone wrong in the growth of the sample (bad medium, temperature fluctuations etc..... Was also a scientist) and they were going to be a few days later.

17 year old son very happy and healthy young man. I know it is hard to say. But try not to worry. It is very
Likely there was some problem with the procedure or associated controls (even someone who reads the results on holiday etc..)

Thanks for the replies :-). 3littlewomen, did you get any results back at all in the end? That's the other thing I'm worried about - that for done reason the sample will be corrupt or something and the amnio was all for nothing!

I had an amnio a few weeks ago that failed and they were unable to grow anything. This is very rare apparently but the reason was because the sample of fluid was very bloodstained as the needle nicked my placenta . I ended up having a second amnio.

Yes, I got back negative results. No chromosomal abnormalities.

Hope your test has the same outcome

Sorry to hear your results have been delayed ThoughtExperiment, did they tell you why?
The waiting is awful, I had a CVS on Thurs last week but have waited two weeks for it as they tried the week before & they couldn't access the placenta & I had to wait a week for the original appt.
What hospital did you have your amnio taken at & what was your risk factor??
Hope you get some good news very soon xx

The waiting is just horrible isn't it. I have a dd who is 23 months and both myself and dh carry a genetic condition. I had an amino at 16 weeks and then results took another 3 weeks. They sent our blood tests off 4 days after the amnio so that's a reason why ours was delayed.

Luckily dd is only a carrier (like we are) so her chances of affected children are dependent on whether she finds a partner who is also a carrier!

I hope your wait isn't too much longer xx
