Antenatal tests

Measuring small at 27 weeks and worried about chromosomal abnormalities. Any positive stories out there?

I had some horrible news yesterday. I went for a routine check in with the Consultant due to me having a high risk pregnancy and found out that my baby is measuring really small for dates.

Dr sent me for an urgent growth check scan which showed that my baby measured in the 9th centile which doesn't seem too tiny but the average was bumped up considerably by the abdominal circumference which was above average whereas some almost all of the other measurements were much less than 10th centile.

One of the measurements (biparietal diameter) was so low it was off the scale and the rest was pretty uniform 5-8th centile. So now I've got visions of having a scary looking baby with a tiny head and massive tummy. I'm trying not to freak out about possible chromosomal abnormalities but it is really hard :(

The good news is that the placenta looked healthy, cord flow looked normal and the doppler studies of uterine arteries etc all looked normal. Other info that might be important is that I've a history of multiple 1st trimester miscarriages, strong family history of DVT so already on Fragmin and Aspirin. Also I'm 36 and this is an IVF pregnancy which the Dr said were risk factors.

I'm trying to concentrate on the positives but had the most horrendous nightmares last night about giving birth to a really scary looking abnormal baby and woke up feeling full of revulsion. Haven't been able to shake that feeling all day :'( Next scan is in 4 weeks which feels like ages away!

Any advice or similar experiences out there?

Have you checked for diabetes

I'm certainly no expert but I know my baby I've just had had a much larger stomach measurement than the rest of his body
By about two to three weeks

And he was less than 7lb because he was taken out early due it my health issues

I was also on aspirin for several mc

Would you like any further testing

They can do a level two ultrasound by a more experienced person if your worried about chromosome abnormalities

I know how worrying this soty of thing is and I really hope you are both fine

I don't have much information, but I'm one of the many on here who have been to hell and back during PG testing, and I just want to come and offer a hand to hold.
If it helps, my DS was the opposite. He was 50th centile for everything, but his head circumference at birth was 95th centile!! That is a HUGE difference. and a very tight fit!!
He didn't look abnormal or freakish in any way. Well other than being a wrinkly screwed up newborn! Wink
I bet that very few people are on an even ratio for every part of their bodies. Everyone is different.

My babies always have massive heads (95th percentile or more, often necessitating another growth scan) and large tummies (80th plus) and short legs (20th). Like me, in fact. And I promise you they don't look weird at all, nor do they have any genetic issues that I know about!

Although I wish children's trousers had a "short" length like adult ones do.

Whether there is an issue or not, I promise your baby won't look odd. The range is so narrow between 5th and 95th percentiles.

I don't think the differences mean an issue, but baby being small is very very occasionally indicative of another issue - hopefully not in your case though.

I also have a history of first trimester losses, although none of my babies were IVF.

Thanks guys. It is reassuring to hear from others that didn't fit neatly into the average measurements but still turned out ok. Not long now until my next scan so fingers crossed done more info/ detail from that.

There is nothing I can do to change the outcome but that doesn't help me relax much.
