To think that name changing is silly?

I am sure this subject has been done to death, but humour me. I am relatively new, probably been a member for two months or so and it confuses the life out of me all these different people who are the same ones but with different names. Is it possible that MN only has around 30 members but they are often wearing a different hat?

kreecher, there are a couple of valid reasons to namechange and a few dodgy ones. Valid include posting about something embarrassing (because you don't want people who you might actually meet to know it was you), changing for fun to have a themed name (at Christmas or Easter), or because you have been forced to do so by people in RL working out who you are.

Name changing is only dodgy when it is done for Trolling (making up a story to start an argument).

There is someone on here today accusing the more prolific posters of all being one person. It isn't true. They are trolling.

I am usually ShowOfHands but change my name all the time and for short periods. Usually because I fancy it, have a short attention span and have An Idea. I don't hide that I am SOH, troll or say anything I wouldn't under my more well known name. I checked my list of other names a while back and I have many.

I like the seasonal changes or the temporary ones for jokey threads. And I can understand that there are sometimes valid reasons for a namechange. But I get really confused when someone well-known changes 'cause I can never remember who's who.

Lately either lots of people have namechanged, or there are lots of new members - I keep seeing new names everywhere.

I name change for Xmas, Easter etc.

Some posters have been outed and had trouble caused by nutters people who recognised them.

Very different to malicious namechanging to cause aggro.

I namechange occasionally for fun, but also because a few people know my name at work and also DD occasionally stalks me comes on here.

99% of the time, what I have to say wouldn't offend (or possily interest) them, but there's always that 1%....

I name change every few months or so, or when I dereg cos 'I'm giving up MN' and then come back again.

I don't particuarly want to be a 'personality' or 'known' on here, I'd prefer poele notice what is siad rather than who is saying it.

I had to name change. I'm actually not that hard to figure out, and no that isnt an invitation for people to start trying to figure me out.

I name changed because something has happened in my life and i was starting totally afresh so thought i would on MN too.

I have been a member for just over a year, posting regularly.

Sometimes it is necessary. I am open about the fact that i am a name changer.

roneef i think it is somewhere in your profile thing but if you are looking to leave your old name behind and have another email address, do that. That's what i did.

i namechange all the time. well, every couple of months. I saw what happened to cod et al. It is just sensible. Unless you are desperate for people on here to know you as a regular mner, I think most people just come on here to chat to the world and are not bothered about being known as a reg.

really do not wish for the dull minutae of my life to be put together.. don't think its fair that I end up divulging various details about my dc in identifiable way iykwim.. er I don't want to be sacked

i would only name change for the seasonal things and then i like to be obvious (and if i don't think i am i'll say who i really am a few times)

although, i should be embarrassed by how often i'm on here (window open at work and keep flicking to it to look)

i would name-change if it was really hard for me to talk about what i needed to talk about though.

(i hope no-one in RL knows me on here, because i'm quite scathing about most people! )
