Started a new business recently and. although I've registered to the telephone sales preference it takes a few weeks to initiate. I'm totally sick of people ringing to get me to take up 'special offers for new businesses like yourselves'.

They get you in a corner, believing they really are from BT (until you discover that your bills will now be coming from TML, your approved local BT wholesale provider)or that you 'agreed' to place an ad in a local Crime Prevention booklet (particularly odious lot, those ones). It's got to the point where I don't want to answer the office phone any more.

They are a shower of bastards.

They're people like me though , got a family one my income alone, if I sell stuff, we have Christmas, if not, I'll be sacked and sent back to the dole office.

I know we're annoying. And we do feel horrid. Believe me. We know we're bothering you. But we ring because maybe one person in three will take up the product.

My advice. Deep breath. When you have refused three times, simply put the phone down. Or may I recommend an answering machine? Keeps the MIL down too .

YANBU. The phone goes, I imagine it must raise your hopes (whee - a customer!) only to drop them like a stone (oh - a cold call.)
My DH recently started a business and has had a similar experience, although mostly by post rather than telephone; advertising, printers, insurance, accountants, solicitors - gah! Six months later it seems to have all calmed down, yours will too no doubt.

The Crime Prevention booklet - is that actually the scam mentioned here? (Dates from 2007, but was the best I could find on a quick google.) We also got called by them, DH felt aggrieved with the cops (Hello I'm ringing from Warwickshire Police Force blah blah blah ..) until he realised later it had nothing to do with them. Luckily we didn't get caught.

YABU because you used the word "peeps" which made me want to scrub my eyes with a suitable cleaning fluid.

WhereYouLeftIt - that is the scam. They now call themselves 'Millenium Media' (they can't even spell). I really annoyed one of them today because he ended up hanging up on me. I thought that was my prerogative.

even worse are the bloody recorded telesales - I don't know how many times I have dashed downstairs to answer the phone, only to get 'are YOU struggling with debt? blasted at me by that bloke from the cilit bang ad!
I rang one back once - I started the phone call with 'are YOU f*ing annoyed with recorded cold calling?' they put the phone down on me....
