AIBU?

to think spending £70 on a car stereo is madness when we're only keeping the car until October?

DH is the only one using it, and he drives about 20mins to work in it daily. He doesn't use it for anything else.

We've just taken out a huge loan to consolidate all of our debt, but this month we have a little spare. I want to save it, he wants a car stereo! I've suggested he listen to the radio on his phone ('it will drain the battery') or his Mp3 ('I don't like to wear headphones when driving') or that he buys a cheap one. ('It won't be very good')

I wouldn't mind if it was a long term investment, but we only need the car until october when our new car will be ready. MIL might have it afer us, (as a gift in return for some childcare) but surely she can buy her own stereo!

(This is my first AIBU... be gentle!) ;-)

YANBU, get him to look on ebay/free ads for a basic radio.

Isn't it illegal to wear more than one headphone while driving anyway?

YANBU...I think he's being a dick to be honest.

YANBU - Agree with Snowflake. If you've got debts makes sense to pay those off first. Buuuut, can't you take stereos out of the car & move them to another?

YANBU - if you've got extra money this month use it to pay off a bit extra of the debt or put into savings account for when you do need it.

if you are only keeping car to October tell him to sing to himself!

It is illegal to wear headphones while driving. But I agree he could look for a cheap stereo.

Does he usually do things like this ? Is this why you have debts ?

Why can't he buy the stereo, then when you sell the car, take the stereo out and put it in the new one.

My DH is like this and I have to make sure he is thinking long-term. If I try to stop him I find he will buy it anyway He put some god-awful huge speakers in the car before DS was born and got his mate to wire them in - they were probably a death trap, I made him take them out once DS came along!

It's a waste for such a short time. If it were longer it might make sense to get a good one that lasts.

Is it really illegal to wear headphones while driving? I recently read that being totally deaf wasn't a bar to getting a licence so that seems a bit odd.

Glad you all agree with me!

Hadn't realised driving with headphones was illegal so I'll stop suggesting that.

He is awful with money- always has been. Have just put him on a tight leash, but it doesn't really kick in until next month.

He didn't buy it, though, which is a HUGE improvement! We aren't impoverished by any means, but I've sorted the finances so we have lower repayments for longer. Which gives us a little extra for emergencies. We can also overpay the loan... He just sees it as money that isn't accounted for!

I think YANBU, but DH would say that you were. He would think £70 was nothing to spend on a stereo, but he would probably buy two, a good one and a basic one, and swap them over when getting rid of the car.
