AIBU?

To think SurAlun (now Lord) Sugar should not be in government?

I mean, seriously, who is Gordo going to drag on to the sinking ship next? Simon Cowell? Amanda Holden? Piers Morgan?

Appointing SurAlun as "business tsar" looks like the cheapest and most desperate publicity stunt to me. Does he think we'll be impressed because he's on telly? I am

Lots of people will be impressed though.

LOL @ Him being dragged on the sinking ship, i'm sure he has a mind of his own.

Of course not. It just shows what a complete joker GB is.

Yes, Tamarto but I'm sure he is also thrilled to be given a peerage.

His business cred is at least better than the average politician.

Oh NO

One of the secondary pleasures of watching The Apprentice is listening to all the contestant go yes s'ralan no s'ralan three bags full s'ralan.

Doesn't sound half as funny when you say Lord Sugar.

OOH actually perhaps they will have to say Milord. Yay!

Sorry to hijack a serious political thread with my own ramblings. Agree with OP by the way. Please run the country Mr Brown, stop poncing about with celebrities and saying you hope Susan Boyle feels better and other scuh crap.

Agree smrshackleton that Alan Sugar is probably delighted - good on him, really. Bless his little socks

I dunno - maybe he's cut through all the crap and get the job done?

Report
Doodle2U · 05/06/2009 14:02

Has he got a moat?

londonone · 05/06/2009 14:03

lol laweaselmys - he's hardly a shining example of business acumen, more a minor celebrity!

A serious political thread... in AIBU really?

I'm not saying he's fantastic - in fact I know he's had some severe failures - but lots of politicians have no business experience at all - or like boris were employed by business but didn't actually do anything.

at the joke apparently going round Westminster that SuBo has been calling Gordon to ask if he's OK.

I too don't think Sir A is a glowing example of business acumen, his past few years have been distinctly rocky (admittedly he's not alone in that)

I am just very that this appointment would have been made if he wasn't on t'telly.

YABU. He isn't "in government", he has been appointed a business tsar by a failing PM who is trying to win back public votes in time for the inevitable general election that will probably have been called by October.
Sralan is just a publicity stunt by the government and will probably be quietly dropped by the next PM.

It demonstrates why we need sweeping reform to our current political system.

I think it's utterly outrageous that someone can be given the right to vote on all kinds of legislation for the rest of their life just because the PM is in a bit of a tight spot at the moment.

Whatever his personal strengths and weaknesses he's not been elected, he's being put there on the say so of a PM who wasn't even elected to that role. What bothers me is not so much that he gets to make enterprise policy for the last few months of this government, it's that he gets to vote on everything from immigration policy to maternity rights and equality legislation for the rest of his life.

I think the system is outrageous and I'm going to get my pitchfork and march on Westminster if anyone else is up for it!

I believe he is being awarded the peerage so he will be part of government, he's not in the cabinet but the idea is certainly that he should be part of government, hence the peerage.

Report
idranktheteaatwork · 05/06/2009 14:26

I thought they hadn't confirmed the peerage, just stated it may lead to one.

Report
londonone · 05/06/2009 14:28

It's being fairly widely reported and not denied in any way, that has been situation in the past.

Itsjustafleshwound · 05/06/2009 14:30

Perhaps t'internet was down on Wed and Gordy was forced to watch BBC1??

Report
Catz · 05/06/2009 14:39

Well I guess it's not confirmed in the sense that officially it is the Queen's decision and that she is merely advised by the PM but given she always acts on the advice of the PM that is just a technicality. They couldn't give him a Govt role unless he was in one of the Houses of Parl so he has to have a peerage.

Wot a joke - aside from his bullying and sexism, he's hardly the model of a successful businessman. Amstrad sold a pile of crap and the only way he has amassed his fortune is via the rising property market.

Bullying and sexism?
What do you mean?

Totally agree with OP. What is it with dishing out peerages to people so that they can sit on gordie's right hand?

You can just imagine him thinking "oh fuck what am I going to do? People like the apprentice... Alan Sugar.... Yes if i get him people will lurve me....".

What a twat.

I'm sure there are many many far better people he could have called on.

YABU.

Sralan has worked to acquire his wealth so therefore he is qualified to discuss business.

I prefer to listen to someone who worked his way up from nothing rather than some over-privileged Eton educated sop who has no empathy with the ordinary working person on the street.

Sralan has never forgotten his roots and that is why he is so good at business.
Reach4sky
Saying that his wealth is just down to rising property prices is quite frankly churlish, ignorant and demonstrates that you know diddly about business.
