People keep looking at me in horror!

She has three perfectly good ones. She still likes them. There is nothing wrong with them.

Why the hell should I shell out nearly £10 on another lunchbox???

I wouldn't either. I only changed eldest manky's this time because it was really stinky and I could not get it clean!
Tell them to get stuffed.

I replaced DS1's at the start of YR2 - it was still perfectly usable - but he was getting a little bit embarrassed about having a Thomas the Tank Engine lunchbox at 7yrs old - while all his friends in his year had "older" character ones - and the only other children with boxes like his one were in receptioin.

lol yup - if there was the embarrassment factor I would, it isn't like I'm sending her in with teletubbies! She is 5, has piglet and care bears (both of which she loves and will tell anyone she loves)

I replaced DS's because the fabric was filthy and I couldn't be bothered to scrub it. I didn't replace his bookbag/PE bag/swimming bag etc though. They will be replaced when they need replacing.

YANBU

I sent DS (8) in with his old Thgomas lunchbox as he had lost (or had stolen) his second DR Who one. He pt up with it for as couple of days then asked me if he could use an ordinary tupperware as he was embarrassed. Tupperware never been lost or gone missing - maybe Dr Who had been pinched and this box not appealing.

People keep looking at you in horror because you haven't bought dd a new lunchbox?

DS got a new one because he was strarting at nursery - DD on the other hannd can use one of the perfectly good 4 she already has!

What anal people to even realise that you haven't bought a new one - I couldn't tell you what sort of kunchbox anyone in DDs class has so wouldn't know if they had a new one or not!

I only know what lunchboxes DS1's classmates have because he tells me

Mind you I've probably set myself up for buying another replacement lunch box for DS2 in a few years time - while DS1's old Thomas was usable it was very well used and didn't look that great - so I bought DS2 a new one for when he starts school next week........and let him choose, and of course he's only gone and chosen Thomas

Are you sure people are looking at you in horror ? Like the last poster its not the kind of thing I notice or care about !

Dds have school lunches but for years before that used to have a packed lunch ... they had tupperware containers and it never occurred to me or them to have either more than one or buy a new one each year ... this is rampant consumerism that I don't get

(though agree re the embarrassment factor, but then I object to paying money to advertise products for companies and won't buy stuff with characters on anyway!)

You may call me a meanie if you wish

YANBU,

My DS2 is in Year3 has had the same two for 2 years now, one is plain blue and he has another one from Capri sun on the front it has a crab and it says 'don't pinch my lunch' He finds it highly amusing . Theres nothing wrong with them so why buy more?

I am a bit that people are looking at me so stunned too (I have no idea why, they keep bringing lunchboxes up in conversation, hence me saying she is on the same one)

Gosh, I've never even noticed what lunchboxes DS's classmates have so wouldn't know if they are new or not.

DS only got a new one this year because he old one broke.

YANBU,

It really gets on my wick that people buy new school bags, new uniforms, new pencil cases and so on, ad infinitum, at the start of every school year. WHY?

No wonder people struggle so much to pay for the essentials when they waste so much on 'keeping up with the Jones"

ethanchristopher · 10/09/2008 19:04

i think people buy new uniforms because kids grow soo quick.

and kids also arent great at keeping care of their things

if its usable and not all holey and stuff i would make them use again

but otherqise i would buy a new one
