AIBU?

To reduce all utensils and cutlery to two of everything

I am fed up with the amount of cups, plates and utensils being used (mostly by me) in my household of two. I seem unable to rein myself in and think I should just remove everything and leave just two cups, two bowls, 2 plates, two glasses and two sets of cutlery.

We rarely have guests or visitors.

Anyone ever done this?

Sounds daft to me.

What do you do then when someone comes round?
Or what happens when you break one ? Confused

You can always hide them in a shelf up high for when needed

I don’t know why everyone is making it sound so outrageous 😂😂

Just box them up and put them on the top of the cupboard. Get them if you’ve guests over but don’t end up snowed under

Why wouldn’t you?

It will get annoying when you have to keep washing things up when you just fancy a quick snack or cupps

I have been in holiday accommodation where crockery and cutlery was supplied in exact amounts per person.

It's unbearable.

Keep some spare tucked away. I'm always breaking glasses & crockery, never anything else tho, oddly.

Sounds fine... I’d just box up the extras and keep them somewhere safe. Most 4-person households have 8 plates etc, I don’t see the big deal?

D’oh - I misread as 2 of everything PER PERSON.
Nah, one of everything each will be a pita.

I did this! Not with cutlery but plates, bowls, glasses and mugs. Two of everything in one cupboard. It worked really well, I wish I'd thought of it sooner.
I kept the extras but put them away so they were harder to get to.
I don't do it now but that's only because I moved to a place with a dishwasher!

When I was a kid our house was been ripped apart ( new floors walls ceilings ! ) we had to move out for about 4 months and to save on money / space / time my DD wrapped all the non essential / spare stuff in cling film , there was four of us so he left four plates / bowls / cups / etc unwrapped but with the intention of unwrapping the other stuff when we needed it .
When we moved back home it was still wrapped and think it stayed like that for about a year !
Try this ,

I've reduced my glasses and cups, but not my plates, bowls and cutlery.
It's fine, just give them a quick wash under the tap and pop them in the drainer as soon as you've used them.

So you’d have the energy to plan and carry out a full overhaul of your household cutlery & crockery, but not the willpower to just rinse your used teaspoon for your second cuppa?

It’s a bit bonkers, innit?

1st world problems, what a full post. Just chuck them if to you want to. Why ask for other people's advice?

The point is that I WILl wash them up, by hand, and put them away to be used next time. At the moment I put them in the dish washer and seem to fill it to the brim daily with every cup and glass I own and then have to put it all away again. If I had one cup then I would have to wash it to have a second, third or fourth cup of tea!

I was thinking of doing exactly what has been suggested - putting it all on the top of a cupboard and then on the rare occasion that I do have a guest I can just get an extra set down. Then if it suits me I will just get rid of as much as I can.

And the point is that with just me and a ten year old here the amount of stuff I put in the dish washer on a daily basis is ridiculous. I am fed up of the hassle.

Do you have a lot of time on your hands OP?

If there are two of you and you rarely have guests then I’d say six of everything sounds reasonable as a minimum. Otherwise, what happens on the rare occasion when you do have two other couples over for dinner? You won’t have enough cutlery to feed them!

For a cup of the same tea an hour or two later would you not just rinse the mug quickly?

Maybe plates but not cutlery. If you're making a stew or a pasta sauce, it's useful to have several spoons on hand for tasting unless you can be bothered rinsing between every single tasting. Or if you drop a fork on the floor at dinner, it's nice to be able to just grab a clean one and run back to the table

I honestly don't think I have ever had two other couples over for dinner in my life. Sounds exciting though. Grin

I wouldn't even do that. I use two mugs a day. One for tea and one for coffee. Both get used multiple times in the day and go in the dishwasher at the end.

You neither need a clean mug or to be washing up multiple times a day.

Not if it is in the dishwasher. I am more likely to just get another one. Confused

Sounds like a plan.
Give it a trial run?
I recently left a box outside with 8 or so mugs in. People helped themselves. My cupboard has room in it now. Win/win.
