To intervene when my husband is shouting at our daughter

My husband is being really quite nasty to our oldest daughter who is 4. He seems to have decided that I am 'too nice' to her. He had a huge go at her for not tidying away some of her toys and she got really upset and I said that we would tidy up together and he shouted at me and told me she was able to do it on her own. Eventually she tidied up but she was really upset and she then went to her room and he tried to stop me going and comforting her but I went in anyway. She was really hurt by it all. Later he had a go at me and said that whatever I thought disagreeing in front of her was never right and the worst thing a parent could do and that I was undermining his parenting and this will cause her to not respect what he has to say. He said this was part of the reason he got so angry. I do kinda understand this but he was just being really nasty I felt. He said that me intervening was the main reason she was so upset which just isn't true. Am I being unreasonable trying to stop him having a go at her I just think what he is doing is really nasty but he just seems really certain that what I am doing is wrong and he sent me articles about disagreeing in front of the kids. There have been a few other times when he has also been a bit nasty just over really little things.
